Role of Today’s Media and
Information in Society
In the Philippines, communication media
perform three major functions: (1) To inform, (2)
to entertain, and (3) to educate.
Communication and media play important roles in
society. Crispin Maslog, a communication educator, in
his book, Philippine Communication: An Introduction
(2007) categorizes these roles into political, economic,
and social.
Cultural roles must be added to understand how
communication and media contribute to cultural
development.
Political, Economic, Social and Cultural.
The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural
Organizations or UNESCO (2011) also highlights the important
role of media and information in a democratic society, especially
in promoting and protecting peoples right to communicate,
access information, and engage in social and civic activities.
Media and the internet also set the trends and fads,
shape attitude, model behaviour, and influence
worldviews.
In a democratic society, communication media are
expected to serve as a platform for people to express their
opinions, issues, concerns and seek redress further
grievances.
They should also be a channel for intercultural dialogue
and understanding.
The media, Internet, and other information providers are
drivers of the phenomenon called information explosion,
which refers to the availability of enormous amount of
information, often in real time from different sources.
