What is Multipication?
Multiplication is an operation that represents the basic idea of repeated
addition of the same number. The numbers that are multiplied are called
the factors and the result that is obtained after the multiplication of two or
more numbers is known as the product of those numbers.
Multipication

To use the logical term “multiplied by” , the cros symbol “x” is considered to
be the multipication sign, althought you can also use a dot (•) or an asterisk (*).

Example :
Multipication Formula

The multiplication formula is expressed as,

Multiplicand × Multiplier = Product

o Multiplicand : The first number (factor).

o Multiplier : The second number (factor).
o Product : The final result after multiplying the multiplicand and multiplier.
o Multiplication symbol : “×” , “•” , “*”(which connects the entire expression)
How to Solve Multiplication Problems?
o Multiplication Without Regrouping
Multiplication of two numbers without regrouping involves smaller numbers where there is no
need to take a carry-over to the next higher place value.

o Multiplication With Regrouping

Multiplication of more than two numbers with regrouping
involves numbers with a 2-digit product. In this type of
multiplication, we need to take a carry-over to the next higher place
value.
o Multiplication of Positive
Numbers on Number Line
o When multiplying two or more
Multiplication on Number Line
positive numbers, there is a simple rule
Multiplication on a number line refers

to the application of multiplication operation
Since this is multiplication, we will
on a given set of numbers via a number line.
move towards the right side of the
number line.
o Multiplication of Negative Numbers on Number
Line
When multiplying more than two negative numbers,
use the Even-Odd Rule: Count the number of negative
signs. In the case of an even number of negatives, the
result is positive, but for an odd number of negatives, the
result is negative.
o Introduction to Multiplication on Number Line
Multiplication on a number line is the application of multiplication operation on a given set of
numbers on a number line. Multiplication is also known as repeated addition. To perform multiplication on
a number line, we start from zero and move towards the right side of the number line for a given number of
times.

o Multiplication Word Problems

Multiplication word problems can be easily solved by carefully observing the situation and
identifying the solution.
Example :
in one class there are 8 study groups. 5 students each, How many student are there in the class?
Answer :
In mathematicals sentense is 8 x 5 = 45
So, the number of students in that class is 45
Tips and Tricks on Multiplication
1. In multiplication, the order of numbers does not matter. So choose the order that you are more comfortable with. When
using the multiplication tables, compared to 9 × 4, students may remember 4 × 9 more easily.
2. When multiplying three numbers, choose the two numbers that can be multiplied easily. For example, multiplying 5 × 17
× 2 will be difficult if we try to multiply 5 × 17 first. Instead of this, multiplying 5 and 2 gives 10 which can be easily
multiplied by 17 to get 170.
3. When multiplying a 2-digit number with a one-digit number, it sometimes helps to break the two-digit number as per the
place values. Then multiply each part and add. For example, 37 × 4 can be solved mentally by breaking 37 as 30 + 7.
Then 30 × 4 = 120 and 7 × 4 = 28. So, the final answer is 120 + 28 = 148. While this may seem more tedious when
written down, it is much easier to solve mentally.
4. Even if you do not remember the multiplication fact, it can be easily mentally figured out. For example, 17 × 9 is
difficult to remember. But this can be restructured mentally as 17 × (10 - 1). So, the answer will be 170 - 17 = 153.
