OBJECTIVES:
At the end of this lesson, you should be able to:
• discuss personal contributions that can actually solve the
problems of climate change; and

• make a stand on how the consequences of one’s action

affect the lives of others and the environment.
Understanding the Consequences of
Personal and Local Action to Global
and Planetary Climate Change
CHANGE IS INEVITABLE.
The era of globalization certainly contributed in changing the
landscape of the world and its inhabitants.

Amid this growth and advancement in technology, the

environment seems to bear and suffer the consequences.
CHANGE IS INEVITABLE.

The issue on climate change

is one concrete
manifestation and realization
that the age of globalization
has taken its toll on the
natural environment.
PLANETARY NETWORKS
• It refers to the interconnections and
interrelations among the various elements
in the natural environment enveloping
and affecting Earth as well as beyond
Earth’s surface.

• It includes the rain, the wind, the sun’s

rays, gasses, and other climate related
elements.
GLOBAL WARMING
This is a phenomenon which
refers to the rising of global
average temperature on
Earth’s surface due to the
thinning of the ozone layer in
the Earth’s atmosphere.
GLOBAL WARMING
The ozone stays high up in the
atmosphere where it is formed, and
its huge quantity is enough to form
shield for earth against the sun’s
ultraviolet (UV) rays.
GLOBAL WARMING
Ultraviolet rays can cause cornea
damage and skin cancer; stunt the
growth and food manufacturing
process of green plants and destroy
the floating microorganisms at the
base of the ocean food chain.
GLOBAL WARMING

Global warming causes changes in the

climate patterns and weather cycles of the
Earth.
CLIMATE CHANGE

This refers to the major changes in the

climate that last for long periods of time.
CLIMATE CHANGE

Weather is the atmospheric condition

involving hot or cold, rainy or dry, cloudy or
clear sky and stormy or calm in a short
period of time. (Arzadon et.al 2015).
EFFECTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE

1. LONGER, MORE INTENSE ALLERGY

SEASONS
Warming temperatures in some areas like the Northern
US are extending the periods when plants release
pollen. This affects not only people who already have
allergies, but also those who don’t.
EFFECTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE
2. FOODS YOU LOVE ARE BECOMING LESS
NUTRITIOUS AND COST MORE.
The same CO2 accumulating in our atmosphere is actually
changing the composition of fruits and vegetables that we eat,
making them less nutritious. Extra CO2 is speeding up
photosynthesis causing plants to grow with more sugar and
less vitamins.
EFFECTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE
3. MORE COMMON, MORE SEVERE AND
MORE LONG-LASTING HEAT WAVES
Extreme heat and heat waves have happened since the
beginning of time. But across the board, climate change is
making heat waves more common, severe, and long-lasting.
Heat waves can become so intense that our roads actually
melt.
EFFECTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE
4. WILDFIRES CAUSING DAMAGES TO OUR
LANDSCAPES AND COMMUNITIES AS WELL
AS OUR HEALTH.
Wildfires are devastating communities around the world.
From the billion-dollar destruction they cause to the costs of
lost plant, animal et. These are scaring our landscapes.
EFFECTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE
5. HURRICANES ARE BECOMING MORE
LIKELY AND MORE DANGEROUS.
Around the world, average sea surface temperatures are rising.
As seas get warmer, they add more water vapor and heat energy
into the atmosphere. This extra heat and water, just happened to
be the perfect fuel for hurricanes and in the right conditions, can
make dangerous storm as even more powerful.
EFFECTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE

6. MORE CLIMATE-RELATED MASS

MIGRATION

Climate change is already prompting an increase in migration,

with people being forced to leave their homes because of
drought, flooding and other climate-related disasters.
EFFECTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE

7. DISEASES ARE SPREADING MORE EASILY

Disease-carrying insects thrive with warmer-than-
average temperatures, extreme heat waves, and heavy
rains. They live longer lives in extended periods of
warm weather, fly into new areas that were previously
too cold, and reproduce in water deposits left by the
rain.
SIMPLE THINGS YOU
CAN DO TO HELP FIGHT
CLIMATE CHANGE
1. SAVE ENERGY

Saving energy not only saves

your money but helps you cut
carbon emissions too. For
example, refrain from using your
cellphone while charging.
2. IMPROVE YOUR DIET

When buying fruits and vegetables, try to buy organic.

Organic foods are healthier because they contain fewer
harmful substances, and growing them also protects the
environment and the climate.
3. SAVING WATER AT HOME
Clear water that is pumped to most homes has been
treated which uses lots of energy.
4. RECYCLING
It can really help stop climate change because re-using
materials usually uses less energy.
5. COMPOST FOOD SCRAPS
If leftovers, peels, cores and cuttings were composted,
they would reduce emissions and help protect healthy
soil.
6. PLANT TREES
Trees help suck carbon out of the air and stabilize the
climate.
7. AVOID PLASTICS WHENEVER YOU CAN

Almost every plastic

produced from fossil
fuels and in every single
phase of its life cycle,
plastic emits greenhouse
gases.
8. GET ON YOUR BIKE

Bicycle is still the number one form of sustainable

transportation.
9. BE INFORMED AND SUPPORT

Support organizations that hold

companies to account for the
environmental practices.
10. SHARING IS CARING
If we own less and use more things collectively,
we need to produce fewer things and that saves
on resources. Sharing is cars, exchanging clothes,
lending and borrowing tools are multiple different
possibilities for collective consumption.
