Plant at Dentistry
College

Project Overview:
 The aim of the project is to
design an off-grid PV system that
is capable of powering a water
purification plant to meet USTF
dentistry college water demand.
 PV panels shall be installed on
the roof nearby the existing RO
and its auxiliary filters.
 The plant consists of an RO unit ,
a Softener and a UV filter.
Demand

In terms of water:
daily water consumption has been
estimated as: 13 hours * 60 gal/hr =
780 gallons/day
Total of 3900 gallons/week.

In terms of electricity:
total power ~ 1.1 kW and hence the
estimated daily Energy would be:
1.1*13= 14.3 kwh /day
Resource
PV panels
Selection
Number of PV panels was selected is (12 PV panels)
Solon SE (225 Wp 25 Volts) panel mono-silicon
based on:

1- energy requirement.

2- availability in the local market.

3- Price.
Storage options were defined
based on:

Storage 1- Compatibility
Options

2- Effectiveness
1. Buffer Tank w/o Batteries.

1. Worst case scenario:

0 gallons were store during weekend.

2. Best case scenario:

840 gallons. (accounts to 104% of a
single working day maximum water
demand).
2. Batteries w/o Buffer Tank.

 14 batteries with 1260 Ah of global

capacity were considered here, the
setup managed to overcome most
deficits during poor solar conditions
due to its 4 days autonomy.
 matching worst-case generation
with maximum demand on an
hourly scale as shown in figure
(1.2) depicted that some partial
deficits might happen and an
interruption in the workflow is
anticipated.
3. Less batteries with Buffer Tank.

 The previous setup cannot

adequately meet constant
maximum demand under worst
case scenario even with a full
buffer tank as observed deficits
exceeded maximum water storage
(104% of single day demand).
 three days of autonomy didn’t
work out well as batteries were
not fully charged at the start of
the week
