where?
What’s the differences between rockfall and a mudflow?
What’s the differences between a rockfall and a
landslide
I just included these because I was
amazed how blind people are to
hazards!
Now you should be ready to
do the quiz on smhw?

Will this make the coast more likely to collapse or not ?

Can you explain why?
1. Heavy rainfall
2. Strong destructive waves
3. Permeable rock that the water can drain away like sandstone
4. Fractures and cracks in the rock
5. Softer rock like clay
This is where you finish

have notes and images!!!
What do you think?

• White cliffs of Dover, Kent.

• Large scale collapse of rock (size
of a football pitch) has fallen
from the cliff face (rock fall).
• Weathering
• Further rock falls along the
coast.
Info sheet : Rock Falls
Rockfall is the rapid, free-fall of rock from a steep
cliff face. Rock fragments fall from the face of the
cliff because of the action of gravity. This is made
worse by freeze-thaw action loosening the rock.
Bare, well-jointed rock is very vulnerable to
rockfall - water enters the joint, freezes and EXAMPLE:
expands, cracking the rock. A scree slope of fallen
White Cliffs of Dover, Kent, United
rock is formed at the bottom of the cliff. Kingdom. Chalk.
March, 2012
An area the size of a football pitch fell
away, sending thousands of tons of
rubble crashing 300ft down on to the
shore.
This huge fall has been blamed on
February’s chilly weather. Rain has
been absorbed by the chalk and has
then expanded as it freezes.

movement.
Info sheet:Landslides
This is the generic term for the downhill
movement of large amounts of rock, soil and mud.
Slides occur on cliffs previously weakened by
weathering. Heavy rain infiltrates the soil and
percolates down into the rock. The now heavier,
saturated mass falls away along a distinct slip
plane. A rock slide is where large amount of rock
slides down a cliff along a straight slip plane. Mud
slides are usually wet, rapid and tend to occur
EXAMPLE: (Mudslide)
where slopes are steep. Lyme Regis, Dorset, United
Kingdom.
6th May 2008
The landslide occurred
after a particularly wet
period during winter and
early spring.
Info sheet :Rotational Slumping
While a slide take a fairly straight path
down a cliff, a slump has a concave slip
plane so material is rotated backwards into
the cliff face as it slips as large pieces of Concave slip plane
rock are pulled downwards. Rotational
slumping is common at clay cliffs, dry
weather makes the clay crack allowing
EXAMPLE:
water to get into it.
Evan’s Cliff, Charmouth, United
Kingdom. Clay.
14th January 2006. 17 People
were trapped.
The slip allowed 200,000
tonnes of mud to topple down,
dragging the coast path down
with it.
