Psychological Factors that

Condition Intellectual
Development of an
Individual

Laurice L. Cabondocan
What is Psychological factor?
 the elements of your personality that limit or enhance the ways that
you think. Your personality can render something as simple as
conversation extremely difficult or very easy.

 The opposite of organic factors, functional factors contribute to the

development of personality, maintain health and well-being and the
structure and course of a behavioral or mental disorder. An example
would be the nature of a subject's social and familial environment.
Intelligence

Is the sum of total of all cognitive processes and skills.

It refers to the ability of an individual to learn from experience,

to reason well, and cope with the demands of social living.
Human Intelligence

Is the ability to acquire, recall and use knowledge to

understand concrete and abstracts concepts, relations among
objects and ideas, and to use knowledge in a meaningful way.
Psychological Factors
1.Early Nutrition/Nutritional Intake
 As it turns out, you really are what you eat, and what your mom ate
during her pregnancy. Prenatal and early nutrition are linked to brain
structure, behavior and yes, intelligence.
 The greater nutrition in the foods we eat, the greater the size of the
caudate– that’s part of our brain that specializes in learning and memory
—and the greater our verbal IQ scores.
2. Environment

Intelligence is also strongly influenced by the environment. During a child's

development, factors that contribute to intelligence include their home
environment and parenting, education and availability of learning resources,
and healthcare and nutrition.
" intelligence is the ability to learn about, learn from, understand, and
interact with one's environment". This is certainly a fact, because the things
that a child will learn in his lifetime will depend on his genetic traits which
are developed in interaction with the environment. Nevertheless, the
experiences in the environment cannot change the nature of intelligence, it
can alter only its field and scope. Vertically it remains the same. Horizontally
it changes. The environment provides opportunities for the development of
intelligence that genetics dictates.
3. Motivation
Motivation is what pushes us to achieve our goals, feel more fulfilled
and improve overall quality of life. Daniel Goleman, who developed the
concept of emotional intelligence in the mid ‘90s, identified four
elements that make up motivation: our personal drive to improve and
achieve, commitment to our goals, initiative, or readiness to act on
opportunities, as well as optimism, and resilience.
From a psycho-educational perspective, 'motivation to learn' has been
described as a student's 'energy and drive to learn, work effectively and
achieve to their potential', in addition to the behaviours associated with
this energy and drive [5]. Kusurkar et al
4. Concentration

A person's intelligence level is tied to their ability to concentrate. There is

research that suggests the level of intelligence a person has can be traced
hereditarily. Meaning that you may inherit the smarts of your parents. In
theory if any one person has a high level of concentration, their intelligence
level would also likely be high.
The process of concentration is a very important part of what we do on a
daily basis. Without the ability to concentrate, thoughts could be lost and
memories wasted. Some consider concentration a way of branding our brains
to recall things and assist our memory.
5. Personality

Personality refers to individual differences in characteristic

patterns of thinking, feeling and behaving.

 Intelligence-personality associations refer to theoretical and

empirical relationships that exist between intelligence, which is
the ability to learn and adapt
6. Anxiety

 anxiety can impact concentration and memory functions. Also,

some of the drugs used to treat anxiety can have side effects
that impact memory, cognition, concentration, etc. So,
although anxiety might not directly impact intelligence, but it
can impact work and school performance by directly impacting
your ability to concentrate or via side effects of drugs.
