ATMOSPHERE By Tanmay Shukla

WHAT IS ATMOSPHERE?
•Atmosphere is a layer of air around the Earth.
•It is estimated that the height of the atmosphere is 1600 kilometers from the mean
sea level.
•It has 5 layers – Troposphere, Stratosphere, Mesosphere, Thermosphere and
Exosphere.
•It is a thin layer in comparison to the Earth.
COMPOSITION AND
STURCTURE
•The atmosphere is composed of gases, water vapour, dust particles and smoke.
•Nitrogen has the largest composition (78%), Oxygen is second (21%), Other gases
have (1%)
•Troposphere is the lowest layer. It is 8km over the equator and 18km over the poles.
•Stratosphere lies above the troposphere. It has the ozone layer which protects us
from harmful UV rays.
•Mesosphere lies above the stratosphere. This is the coldest layer. Meteors burn up in
this layer.
•Thermosphere lies above the thermosphere. The lower part of thermosphere has the
ionosphere.
•Exosphere is the uppermost layer. It is gradually merges with outer space.
GREENHOUSE EFFECT
•Greenhouse effect is a effect that people use to grow plants in cold areas.
•A greenhouse is a glass house which has plants in it. The glass house traps the
sunlight and helps the plants in photosynthesis.
•The energy balance of the earth remains same as some of sun’s rays get re-radiated
into space.
•A scientist named J.B.J Fourier proposed that the earth is an one big greenhouse.
