Introduction
Wireless power transfer (WPT), in its general term has been around
us for decades in applications such as telemetry , satellite
communication , and radiofrequency identification (RFID) tags. Most
of these applications transfer low amount of power in range of
microwatts to milli-watts, for data transfer. For higher power power
applications, from few watts to several killowatts, over moderate
distance.
The WPT has recently been the focus of industrial applications.
Today’s wireless charging is a method of charging batteries without
the use of cables or physical connection with the device specific
grid/renewable sources. Essentially wireless charging for the purpose
of a battery specifically electric vehicle.

ELECTRIC VEHICLES
1) Electric Vehicles are also referred to as battery electric vehicles.
2) They have an electric motor instead of an internal combustion
engine.
3) These vehicles use a large traction battery pack to power up the
electric motor.
4) These vehicles do not have exhaust and do not contain the typical
fuel liquids components.

Components:

1) Battery: In electric drive vehicles the auxiliary battery provides

electricity to electric power accessories.
2) DC/DC converter: This device converts higher voltage dc power
from the battery pack to the lower voltage dc power needed to run
the vehicle accessories.

3) Electirc traction motor: using power from battery pack. This motor
drives vehicles wheels. Some vehicles use motor generators that
perform both drive and regeneration propose .

Components:

On board charger: Takes the incoming AC electricity supplied by the

charge port and converts to DC power for charging the betteries .
4)Power Electronics controller: This unit manages the flow of electric
energies delivered by traction battery controlling the speed of electric
motor and the torque it produces

Inductive Coupling

In inductive coupling (electromagnetic induction or inductive power

transfer) power is transferred between coils of wire by a magnetic
field. The transmitter and receiver coils together forms a transformer.

Department of Electrical Engineering 13

Magnetic Resonance
A magnetic resonant coupling system uses a pair of coil with
additional capacitance , which makes the transmitter and receiver
have the same resonant frequency to transmit power wirelessly. It
enables a highly efficient energy.
Power transfer by using two magnetic coils. Two coupled coils are used
for wireless power transfer.
These coils should have same frequency.
One will be source coil that will transmit the power. It is also called
transmitter coil. The other will be receiver coil that will be attached
with the load.
Here load will be the electric vehicle.
