We use there is/there are to say that someone or something exists
or is present.

There’s a fridge in the kitchen.

There are two beds in the bedroom.

There is a poster on the wall.

How many things are in the garage? Read and count.

There are a lot of things in my garage. There’s a


car, and there are two bikes. One of the bikes is
red and one is green. There are three boxes of old
books, and there is one bag of old clothes. Next to
the bag, there’s a chair. And what’s that? Oh no!
There’s a rat under the chair!

There are nine things: one car, two bikes, three boxes,
one bag, one chair, one rat.
