DEFINITON of SPORTS

2 HISTORY of SPORTS

3 TYPES of SPORTS
SPORTS

is all forms of usually competitive physical

activity which, through casual or organised
participation, aim to use, maintain or improve
physical ability and skills while providing
entertainment to participants, and in some
cases, spectators.
SPORTS

Sport refers to a competitive physical activity. Sport is generally

recognised as activities based in physical athleticism or physical
dexterity. Sports are usually governed by rules to ensure fair
competition and consistent adjudication of the winner. Records of
performance are often kept and reported in sport news. Sport is a
major source of entertainment with spectator sports drawing
large crowds and reaching wider audiences through sports
broadcasting.
History of Sports

Most sports of today only developed in their current form in

the 19th and 20th centuries, though many take their origins
from more primitive sports and pastimes of ancient times.
History of Sports

Although it is impossible to know for sure, it is usually

considered that wrestling and boxing were the first sports
ever played. Competitions using the simple mode of human
transport, running, would also have been among the first
sports played.
History of Sports

Competitions involving hitting, kicking, throwing a ball-like object,

as well as sports related to hunting and throwing would also be
expected to have been played in early times.
Many sports have developed as competitions from means of early
transportation, such as horse riding and canoeing, and from military
activities such as rifle shooting and archery.
History of Sports

At the first recorded ancient Olympic Games in 760 BC,

there was only one event, a footrace. Later Games included
other events such as wrestling, boxing, equestrian, discus,
javelin, and jumping.
History of Sports

The most popular sport played around the world today, Association
football (soccer), has its origins in China. There is evidence in China
that military forces around the 2nd and 3rd century BC (Han
Dynasty) played a game, originally named "Tsu Chu", that involved
kicking a leather ball stuffed with fur into a small hole. Like Soccer,
no hands were permitted during the play of the game.
Sports Trivia 101

Did you know that "GOLF" is the only sports played in our moon
Alan Shepard, an astronaut from the Apollo 14 mission, who was sent to
the moon with two more crew members in 1971, has tried and succeeded
in batting a golf ball on the moon.
He believes that the ball flew for 70 seconds in the air and went as far as
4,000 meters, which is 8 times the Guinness world record for golf!
