Expository Method Teaching

- is a teaching strategy where the teacher presents with the


subject matter rules and provides example that illustrate the
rules.

- it is also a kind of method that interprets or explains a


comprehensive topic or subject matter.
Uses of Expository Method Teaching

1. When relevant information is needed to make the class


understand a part in the lesson.

2. When pupils do not have information and time can be


save by the teacher telling it.

3. When an idea or principle can be learned only by


explanation.
Steps on Conducting Expository Method Teaching

A. Approach
- the proper mindset may be established by recalling past
experiences related to the present lesson. The points to be explained
must be placed before the class.

B. Presentation
- While explaining , it might be well for the teacher to make
use of the following principles:
1. Relate the new to the past experience.
2. Teacher and class should have the same view point regarding what is
to be explained.
3. Exposition means not only explaining but also interpreting.

* To make the explanation clear and effective, devices may be used


such as:
1. Analogies and Stories 2. Illustrations

3. Models 4. Diagrams 5. Demonstrations


6. Outline and Summaries

C. Application
- this step will show whether the pupils/students understands
the explanation or not. It may be given in the form of a test,
creative work or another activity.
Advantage and Disadvantages of Expository Method Teaching

Advantage
-can cover more material in shorter time, make students more
accountable for listening and taking notes.

Disadvantage
- Slow learners get lost, generally most students will lose interest
listening to long lectures, lots of daydreaming. Students don’t learn to
interact in discussion type of activities.
Condition of effective expository method teaching

1. The teacher through understanding of the subject matter to be


explained.

2. The teacher’s comprehension of the student’s ability to


understand the explanation.

3. The use of language and illustrations within the student’s


experiences and understanding.

1. Teacher talk (lecturing)

4. Memorizing
