Objectives
• To better understand the difference
between a resume and a Curriculum
Vitae or CV
• When to use a resume and/or a CV
• Developing a strong CV for graduate
school applications
• Additional career resources for UKHC
nurses, health professionals and staff
2
Curriculum Vitae versus Resume:
What is the Difference?
• Resume – 1 to 2 page document that
highlights your skills, achievements and work
experience (used to apply to jobs)
• Curriculum Vitae – unlimited # of pages;
submitted for jobs in academia, scientific
research, medicine and with graduate school
applications
• Tip: You can have both a CV and a resume
3
When Do You Use a CV
versus a Resume?
• First and most important…most APRNs, faculty,
researchers, etc. have BOTH
• Use a CV when applying to academic positions
(faculty), fellowships, research positions, grant
funding, when submitting a poster or presentation or
when applying to graduate school
• An Experienced RN (has a 2 page resume and a 5
page CV)
• You will hear folks interchange the words so don’t

Advice from An Expert
“For a graduate school application, the CV highlights the students academic history better
for us and more in depth.  The CV will also serve to highlight the students academic
accomplishments, honors and awards, leadership and involvement, fellowships and also
any research areas they may have been involved in previously.
Employment history, volunteer work and internships also are visible which helps us know if
we will have a skills match for advising purposes as well as programming.   Our goal is for
all of our students to be successful in the course work.   Graduate studies are very
different than undergraduate studies,
so it helps us to see previous efforts to help us work with the
applicant/DNP/Ph.D./MS candidates so that together we can create a plan of
study that will meet their needs.”
