Introduction:
Need for the Consumers are the general public :
awareness of
the consumers • Scattered and Unorganised
• Illiterate and Naive

The businessmen, retailers, traders, moneylenders,

service-providers exploit the consumers
• Try to shift the responsibility of product/service on the buyer.
• Plea that it is the awareness and responsibility of the buyer to
check the goods while purchasing.

This has lead to the need of creating consumer

awareness in India.
Consumer Consumer Awareness is an act of making
Awareness sure that the buyer or consumer is aware of
• The information about products/ goods/ services
• Consumers rights.

Consumer awareness is important

• Consumers have the right to information, right to
choose, right to safety and hence can take the right
decision

India has long tradition of food adulteration, black marketing,
hoarding, under weighing, etc
Consumer
movement in From 1960s that the consumer movement began in India

India
Till the 1970s, consumer movement was mainly restricted to writing
articles and holding exhibitions

In recent times, huge upsurge in the number of consumer groups

was observed

The level of dissatisfaction with the sellers and service providers

was to such an extent that the consumers had no choice but to
raise their voice.
After many years of organized struggle, the government was forced
to take notice and finally the Consumer Protection Act (COPRA) was
enacted in 1986.

Consumer awareness is one of the most persistent problems the
Consumer government faces when it comes to consumer protection.
It is the main aim of the Department of Consumer Affairs.
Protection The Consumer Protection Act, implemented in 1986, gives easy
Act,1986 and fast compensation to consumer grievances.
It safeguards and encourages consumers to speak against
insufficiency and flaws in goods and services.
If traders and manufacturers practice any illegal trade, this act
protects their rights as a consumer.
The primary motivation of this forum is to bestow aid to both
the parties and eliminate lengthy lawsuits.
This Protection Act covers all goods and services of all public,
private, or cooperative sectors, except those exempted by the
central government.
The act provides a platform for a consumer where they can file
their complaint, and the forum takes action against the
concerned supplier and compensation is granted to the consumer
for the hassle he/she has encountered.
Consumer Rights is an insight into what rights consumer holds. What if the goods provided
to the consumer by the business is not up to the standard? What rights consumer have in
the court of law to fight against the malpractices of the business firms or seller

Consumer Right to Safety: This is the first and the most important of the Consumer Rights. The
protection must be against any product which could be hazardous to their health – Mental,
Physical or many of the other factors.
rights
Right to Information: The product packaging should list the details which should be
informed to the consumer and they should not hide the same or provide false information.

Right to Choose: A consumer should be convinced of the product he is about to choose and
should make a decision by himself. This also means consumer should have a variety of
articles to choose from. Monopolistic practices are not legal.

Right to Heard: If a consumer is dissatisfied with the product purchased then they have all
the right to file a complaint against it. And the said complaint cannot go unheard, it must be
addressed in an appropriate time frame.

Right to Seek Redressal: In case a product is unable to satisfy the consumer then they have
the right to get the product replaced, compensate, return the amount invested in the
product. We have a three-tier system of redressal according to the
Consumer Protection Act 1986.
Right to Consumer Education: Consumer has the right to know all the information and
should be made well aware of the rights and responsibilities of the government.
