CONSTRUCTION OF CONCRETE TUNNEL

WHY CONRETE TUNNEL IS IMPORTANT ?

• Tunnels avoid disturbing or interfering with surface life and traffic during construction.

•  Tunnels prove to be cheaper than bridges or open cuts to carry public utility services like water, sewer
and gas.

• convenient passage of people and equipment.

•  They could be used for carrying freights and passengers, water, sewage, etc.
INTRODUCTION

• Every tunnel is a one of a kind construction that fulfills the needs of its particular surrounds, but they all share a
common element: the need for structural support during the different stages of construction.

• Concrete and mortar are used throughout: from pre-excavation ground treatment such as terrain stabilization
with micropiles, to shotcrete as primary and secondary lining, as well as cement bolts, slab lining, formwork and
formwork filling.

• The type of tunnel, characteristics of the terrain and construction method will all play a part in determining the
support and lining requirements.
WHAT TYPE OF CONCRETE
USED FOR TUNNELS

• MagnaDense concrete
PRE EXCAVATION OF CONCRETE TUNNEL

• Ground treatment
• Micro-piles for terrain stabilization
• Primary and Secondary Linings.
• Slab lining
• Shotcrete
• Concrete formwork
PRE EXCAVATION OF TUNNEL
SITUATION OF TECHNOLOGY

• A tunnel boring machine (TBM) is a machine that is used to excavate tunnels.

• Electronic monitors and sensors placed in the tunnel boring machine (TBM) help in smooth functioning
of the machine while digging, avoiding existing structures in the process .

• TBM technology has grown in the last 20 years and precise engineering have made it possible to
tunnel through the deeper underground surface .

• An innovative solution is explored with the development of new type of TBM. In the construction of
MTR West Island 703 of the Hong Kong subway system, the newly constructed tunnel was required to
relate to existing tunnel. To achieve this, a tunnel dismantle machine (TDM) was used. It provides
concrete lining along the face of the tunnel and prevents it from collapsing.

ADVANTAGES OF THIS TECHNOLOGY

• TBM are high safety with low overbreaks , little disturbance to surrounding rock mass, and low
manpower.

• Reduces the cost of lining the tunnel, and makes them suitable to use in heavily urbanized areas.

• Improved safety. There are no explosives, and reduces chances of rocks falling on workers' heads
CONCLUSION

• Concrete Tunnels are more economical than open cuts beyond certain
depths.
• Tunnels avoid disturbing or interfering with surface life and traffic during
construction.
• The safety of tunnel construction has considerably increased due to improved
modern method of construction.
• Due to shortening in distance tunnels have proved economical.
