INTRODUCTION
The ceramic materials, in geral, are made up of metallic
and non-matallic elements that most often have ionic
bonds.

In civil engineering, ceramic materials are defined as a

construction material widely used in the three phases of
the construction process.

The word ceramic comes from the Grego “Keramos”

which originally referred to “artifacts of fired clay”.

The ceramic materials are fundamental in
most buildings, due to their
characteristics, such as excellent thermal
and accoustic insulation, high resistance
to temperatures and fire, in addition to
their great durability.

materials, are resistant to high temperatures and
for reason they are used in the construction of:

Steel furnaces;
Heating shielding in space shuttles. They
can also be used as thermal insulators for
resistors and capacitors.

CONCLUSION
In the summary we can conclusion that ceramic
materials are very important to civil engineering
because it´s present in the main construction
processes, from primordial to finishing. They are
used in flooring, walls and roofing. Na important
and well known example is the clay, brick, used
for building construction, they have high
resistance durability and a great diversity of
colors, textures, sizes and shapes.
