CRYOGENICS TESTING OF 6061 MATERIAL

INTRODUCTION
• The last century has seen huge developments in the use of Aluminium across nearly every industry.

• Aluminium is lightweight, soft and malleable metal with good strength and formability.
• Aluminium 6061 alloy composition consists minimum of 95.85% Aluminium, 0.80% Magnesium, 0.40% Silicon etc.
• It has become indispensable for many manufacturers, designers, and architects.
• Aluminium is used in a huge variety of products including cans, foils, kitchen utensils, window frames, and aeroplane

parts.
• One of technique for working with Aluminium is known as Cryogenic Forming.

CRYOGENICS TESTING OF 6061 MATERIAL

PROBLEM STATEMENT
Fatigue Failure:
The structural engineering of the 6061 alloy involves cyclic
loading due to the fact that structural components in a vehicle
are subject to fluctuating load over elastic strain region, thus
leading to higher plastic deformation that results in the

occurrence of low cycle fatigue (LCF) failure.

CRYOGENICS TESTING OF 6061 MATERIAL

PROBLEM STATEMENT
Corrosion :
Mg-Si particles and AlFeSi particles are the main intermetallic
compounds presented in 6061 Al alloy. These particles are
prone not only to producing defective oxide film but also to
inducing localized corrosion.

CRYOGENICS TESTING OF 6061 MATERIAL

OBJECTIVES OF THE
PROJECT
• The 6061-Aluminium alloy is one of the most common and versatile for extrusion. It is generally referred to as structural

Aluminium since its strength makes it ideal for structural applications.

• The combination of properties can also be used in various project types.
• Other factors that favor Aluminium in cold climates are low weight, no surface treatment necessary, and low maintenance

costs.

CRYOGENICS TESTING OF 6061 MATERIAL

SCOPE OF THE
PROJECT
• 6061 is one of the world's most commonly used grade Aluminium grades—the choice for a wide range of applications,

including boats, furniture, and structural applications.

• The cabling reduces the need for supporting structures. For automotive and transportation.
• Aluminium is highly versatile, whether in thinner applications like kitchen foil, or more rugged and durable applications

like military armor or aircraft.
