Essay?
Remember, the
essay is 2/3 of
your TOK
mark.
In the next two lessons, we will be unpacking in groups with other teachers. 
Before then please ensure you have picked 4 essay titles you like and wish to examine more in the library
sessions.

Task: In order to be sorted into breakout rooms, please choose your top 4 PTs you would like to examine more in
the next two sessions. Fill out this form here. 

• #1 Can there be knowledge that is independent of culture? Discuss with reference to mathematics and one other area of knowledge.
• #2 To what extent do you agree with the claim that “there’s a world of difference between truth and facts” (Maya Angelou)? Answer
with reference to two areas of knowledge.
• #3 Is there solid justification for regarding knowledge in the natural sciences more highly than knowledge in another area of
knowledge? Discuss with reference to the natural sciences and one other area of knowledge.
• #4 How do historians and human scientists give knowledge meaning through the telling of stories? Discuss with reference to history

Introduction:  150 words
1. A ‘hook’ to grab the attention of your readers - this could be an engaging, interesting,
intriguing opening, like a quote or a key idea or theory

2. Explain the keywords and concepts/ambigous words of the title, and how you


will interpret them in the main body of your essay. Define the ambiguous word in the
title, explain the scope/remit of the essay clearly. 

3. Outline the scope of your essay -  what two AoKs you will be using ad the knowledge
question/s that you will explore.

• Your conclusion should restate the key points of your essay, and answer the question
directly 

• Don’t sit on the fence - take a position on what’s being asked!  A conclusion can often
be improved by drawing on a quote from a relevant thinker 

• Try to give your reader the impression that their knowledge has been moved forward by
the essay - persuade the reader they now know something they didn’t before reading
the essay.
