Diabetes mellitus refers to a group of diseases
that affect how the body uses blood sugar.

Diabetes is caused by the body’s inability to
produce or respond to the pancreatic
hormone insulin. One of the important
physiological actions of insulin is to control
blood glucose levels. Glucose is an important
nutrient for cellular metabolism, and cells
must receive neither too little nor too much.
A deficiency in the pancreatic secretion of insulin,
or lack of tissue sensitivity to the hormone, leads
to diabetes, the primary feature of which is
elevated blood glucose levels (hyperglycemia.)
Type 1 Diabetes
• In Type 1 diabetes, your pancreas doesn’t make
any insulin. It’s caused by an autoimmune
reaction.
• Type 1 diabetes can start at any age
How to treat type 1 diabetes?
Type 1 diabetes need synthetic insulin every
day, multiple times a day in order to live and
be healthy. They also need to try to keep
their blood sugar within a healthy range.
