Linear Measure
Finding Measurements by Adding or Subtracting

Q1: Find XZ. Assume that the figure is not drawn to scale.

XZ is the measure of XZ. Point Y is between X and Z. XZ can be found by

adding XY and YZ.

Add.
Write and Solve Equations to Find Measurements

Q2:Find the value of x and ST if T is between S and U, ST = 7x, SU = 45,

and TU = 5x – 3.

Draw a figure to represent this

situation.
ST + TU = SU Betweenness of points
7x + 5x – 3 = 45 Substitute known values.
7x + 5x – 3 + 3 = 45 + 3 Add 3 to each side.
12x = 48 Simplify.
x= 4 Simplify.
Now find ST.

ST = 7x Given
= 7(4) x=4
= 28 Multiply.

Answer: x = 4, ST = 28
Q3: Find the value of n and WX if W is between X and Y, WX = 6n – 10,
XY = 17, and WY = 3n.

A. n = 3; WX = 8

B. n = 3; WX = 9

C. n = 9; WX = 27

D. n = 9; WX = 44

Find the Midpoint on a Number Line
Q1: Marco places a couch so that its end is perpendicular and 2.5 feet
away from the wall. The couch is 7.5 feet wide. How far is the midpoint of
the couch back from the wall in feet?

The coordinates of the endpoints of the couch are 2.5 and 10.
Let M be the midpoint of the couch.

Midpoint Formula

x1 = 2.5, x2 = 10

Simplify.
Answer: The midpoint of the couch back is 6.25 feet from the wall.

Name and Classify Polygons
Q1: Name the polygon by its number of sides. Then
classify it as convex or concave and regular or irregular.
Q2: Name the polygon by the number of sides. Then
classify it as convex or concave and regular or
irregular.

A. triangle, concave, regular

B. triangle, convex, irregular

C. quadrilateral, convex, regular

D. triangle, convex, regular

Q3:Name the polygon by the number of sides. Then classify it as
convex or concave and regular or irregular.

A. quadrilateral, convex, irregular

B. pentagon, convex, irregular
C. quadrilateral, convex, regular
D. quadrilateral, concave, irregular
• How do you know if a polygon is a regular polygon?
If it is a convex polygon that is equilateral and equiangular.

• How can you tell if a polygon is concave?

If you extend the sides and one of the lines passes through the interior
of the polygon, it is concave.

• Is it possible to have a polygon that is equilateral and

irregular? Explain.
Yes; a rhombus where the angles are not equal to 90 degrees is
equilateral and irregular.
