Applications of
Boolean Algebra
Introduction
• Boolean algebra has a variety of uses in
the real world. It is used in light switches.
This basic is significant, especially in a
large lighting system where the lighting
system is interconnected in such a way
that it can be controlled using one or
more switches. In this case, several
lighting bulbs that are interconnected
together depend on one switch to control
the power supply (switching on and off)
• The switches can be placed in the up or down position in a
wiring system while still controlling the same lights. Wiring
can be parallel or serial depending on the spacing between
them.
• When wired serially, both switches have to be switched on
to light up the bulbs. When in parallel, one or both switches
have to be turned on to light up the bulbs.
• Then regardless of the state of either switch, the other
switch can still light the bulbs. These operations bring out
the logical operation that is derived from the boolean
algebra
• Boolean algebra is commonly used in industries
that produce computers, its implementation is
realized by the integrated circuits that are in
container form, consisting of a large number of
logic gates. The communication between the gates
is made possible by the use of an external
connection of pins that are related to the input
and output lines of the individual gate.
• The most commonly used is the printed circuit
Industrial board because they have metallic strips. The gate
networks can be applied in the internal
Application connections after programming has been done to
improve the workability of the integrated circuits.
•  Once embedded into the computer systems, the
computer will be able to carry out arithmetic and
logical operations. Algebra enables the machine to
determine the value of an output signal (1 or 0) or
to save a value into the storage unit.
Search Engines

• Other systems that have applied boolean

algebra are search engines.
• Search engines such as Google and
DuckDuckGo use boolean algebra to enable the
users to get data whenever they request or
search.
• The concept of boolean search has been
implemented by the use of logical AND, OR,
and NOT.
• The boolean search considers each webpage
on the Internet as an element of a set. By doing
so, it is easy to retrieve data whenever it is
requested
Boolean algebra in the lighting
system
The lighting system is very essential in our day-to-day life, especially
in this century. It is through the lighting system that is traced back to
boolean algebra that many homes in the world are lit up.

The lighting system has enabled us to have the freedom to do what

we could not accomplish. This is because with light one can
accomplish certain tasks due to increment in working hours.

Many companies in the world have made major advancements due

to the availability of lighting systems. Major cities are also lit
throughout the night. This has led to the growth of the business. The
more the business grows, the more one will increase the working
hours.
Boolean algebra helps the
development of modern
technology

• The use of computers has lessened human labor in most

industries.
• Algebra has been used to develop computers that are
used to monitor various businesses to avoid losses. The
use of computers has greatly impacted society since it
has reduced the time needed to complete a certain task.
•  The use of robots instead of human labor. More
efficient medical services have been offered to patients
due to the machines’ accuracy.
Analysis of flight accidents
• Boolean algebra has been used to come up with an analysis of flight
accidents. The events that lead to failures in complex systems are
incorporated with probabilistic and logical tools.
• The tools make it possible to determine the causes of failures (human
factors, environmental factors, and equipment failures).
• Then it breaks down and groups the causal agents of the accident using
the fault tree method. The faulty tree is used purposely for maintenance
tests, risk analysis, and probability maintenance.
• To identify the cause of a problem, the faulty tree uses a deductive
process to show the relationship between the events that added up to the
cause of the accident . The logical event relationship and diagrams are
used in flight management to identify system failures.
Modeling and
CAD
• Solid modeling systems for computer aided design offer a variety of methods for
building objects from other objects, combination by Boolean operations being one of
them. In this method the space in which objects exist is understood as a
set S of voxels (the three-dimensional analogue of pixels in two-dimensional graphics)
and shapes are defined as subsets of S, allowing objects to be combined as sets via
union, intersection, etc.
• One obvious use is in building a complex shape from simple shapes simply as the union
of the latter.
• Another use is in sculpting (removal of material): any grinding, milling, routing, or
drilling operation that can be performed with physical machinery on physical materials
can be simulated on the computer with the Boolean operation
