The Power of Gratitude
by: Cynthia Q. Lelina

Have you counted your blessings? Have you tried to thank God for giving
your life? Have you thanked your parents for taking care of you? Giving you
food, clothes, house to live in and for sending you to school. When I watched
Fr. Jerry Orbos in the Divine Word Media, his quote, “Gratitude is the Best
Attitude”, caught my attention. To be grateful for everything we receive is
something I am reminded of. The more we learn to be grateful, the more
blessings we receive. So, we must learn to thank even in the little things we
receive. One great blessing to be grateful for to God is having our family
because with them we can fulfill our dreams. Therefore, if we fill our hearts
with gratefulness, this will lead us to a happier and more peaceful life. That’s
the power of gratitude.

Most people infected with the COVID-19 virus will
experience mild to moderate respiratory illness and recover
without requiring special treatment.  Older people, and those
with underlying medical problems like cardiovascular disease,
diabetes, chronic respiratory disease, and cancer are more
likely to develop serious illness. The best way to prevent and
slow down transmission is to be well informed about the
COVID-19 virus, the disease it causes and how it spreads.
Protect yourself and others from infection by washing your
hands or using an alcohol- based rub frequently and not
touching your face.

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a dramatic loss of
human life worldwide and presents an unprecedented
challenge to public health, food systems and the world of
work. The economic and social disruption caused by the
pandemic is devastating: tens of millions of people are at risk
of falling into extreme poverty, while the number of
undernourished people, currently estimated at nearly 690
million, could increase by up to 132 million by the end of the
year.

Influenza (the flu) and COVID-19, the illness caused by the
pandemic coronavirus, are both contagious respiratory illnesses,
meaning they affect your lungs and breathing, and can be spread
to others. Although the symptoms of COVID-19 and the flu can
look similar, the two illnesses are caused by different viruses.
COVID-19 is caused by the 2019 coronavirus, also known as
SARS-CoV-2 while Flu is caused by any of several different
types and strains of influenza viruses. Different strains circulate
each year.

Testing for COVID-19 involves inserting a 6-inch
long swab (like a long Q-tip) into the cavity between the
nose and mouth (nasopharyngeal swab) for 15 seconds
and rotating it several times. The swabbing is then
repeated on the other side of the nose to make sure
enough material is collected. The swab is then inserted
into a container and sent to a lab for testing.

Coronaviruses (CoV) are a large family of viruses that cause
illness ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases
such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV) and
Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV). A novel
coronavirus (nCoV) is a new strain that has not been previously
identified in humans. Coronaviruses are zoonotic, meaning
they are transmitted between animals and people. Detailed
investigations found that SARS-CoV was transmitted from
civet cats to humans and MERS-CoV from dromedary camels
to humans. Several known coronaviruses are circulating in
animals that have not yet infected humans.

A car runs because of its engine. The engine is a machine that
transforms fuel or gasoline into heat energy, making the car’s wheels
turn.
First, gasoline flows into the carburetor where it evaporates and
mixes with air. Then, the fuel air mixture is compressed inside the
cylinder as the piston moves up. A spark is produced by the spark plug
and ignites the mixture. This drives the piston down to make way as
the burning fuel expands. The downward movement of the piston
pushes other parts of the car. The energy released by the gasoline is
transmitted to the wheels. Used gas is then expelled into the air as the
exhaust valves open. Source: Joy in Learning English 6

Letting alcohol take control over your life has many
negative effects on a person and the people around them.
One important effect is the damage you can do to your body.
Drinking can lead to severe illness and even eventual death;
some health consequences to consider might be liver
disease, kidney failure and, for pregnant women, the loss of
their unborn child. Another detriment is that an addiction
could lead to drinking and driving; possibly causing a fatal
car accident for either yourself and/or an innocent by
stander.
Astronauts face many problems in space caused by weightlessness. One of
these problems is floating around the cabin. To solve this problem, astronauts
wear shoes that are coated with a special adhesive. This adhesive sticks to the
floor of the cabin. Serving food is another problem. It won't stay put on the
table! Experts solved this problem by putting food and drinks in pouches and
tubes. It only needs to be mixed with water. Weightlessness also causes
problems when an astronaut tries to work. The simple task of turning a wrench
or a doorknob can be difficult. Since there is no gravity to keep him down,
when he exerts a force in one direction, the opposite force may flip him over
completely. To solve this problem, he must be very careful about how much
force he uses to do these simple tasks. Here on earth, life is much simpler,
thanks to gravity.

All matter, all things can be changed in two ways: chemically and
physically. Both chemical and physical changes affect the state of matter.
Physical changes are those that do not change the make-up or identity of
the matter. For example, clay will bend or flatten if squeezed, but it will still
be clay. Changing the shape of clay is a physical change, and does not
change the matter’s identity. Chemical changes turn the matter into a new
kind of matter with different properties. For example, when paper is burnt,
it becomes ash and will never be paper again. The difference between
them is that physical changes are temporary or only last for a little while,
and chemical changes are permanent, which means they last forever.
Physical and chemical changes both affect the state of matter.
