Electron Transport Chain

Oxidative Phosphorylation
Electron transport chain

The goal of the electron transport chain is Couple

energy stored in electron acceptors to a proton
gradient that drives ATP synthesis.

It is the last component of aerobic respiration and

is the only part of glucose metabolism that uses
atmospheric oxygen.
Intermembrane space

Inner Mitochondrial Membrane

Mitochondrial Matrix

In Complex I
Few glycolysis such as NADH comes to Complex I and
gives up its electrons to Complex I itself. Due to these
actions, it supercharges the Complex I and Starts
shuffling the proteins ( H+ ) from Mitochondrial
Matrix to Intermembrane Space.
With this, the supercharge doesn’t last long however it
gives up it’s current electrons and this is where CoQ
does the work by receiving Complex I’s electron and
passes it to the next Complex.
Q and Complex II
In this Complex. They will receive electrons from
FADH and receive electrons as well from CoQ, it
supercharges the Complex II and begins the work by
shuffling the proteins ( H+ ) from Mitochondrial
Matrix and so on. As it goes, Complex II then gives up
its electrons to Complex III.
Another thing is that these Complexes have the same
work and Electron transporting view up until Complex
IV.
Complex III
In this phase, the same things happens.

The transporting of proteins ( H+ ) from

mitochondrial matrix to Intermembrance space is
conducted as Complex III supercharges due to the
amount of electrons accumulate from previous
complex which is the Complex II.
As this phase goes on and by this time the CytC is now
present for action. Complex III then gives up its
electrons to CytC.
Complex IV
In this complex. CytC gives up its electrons to
Complex IV the same thing as CoQ gives up its
electrons to Complex II.

Complex IV then gets supercharged and does the work

just as the other complexes are which is transporting
the protein from mitochondrial matrix to
Intermembrane Space.
The ATP synthase
In ATP synthase, The ADP comes inside the ATP
synthase regenerate until it comes back as ATP.
