LESSON
OBJECTIVES:
1. Identify the different water people and their
occupations and jobs
2. Distinguish the major stages where the water
goes through
7.1 THE WATER PEOPLE
Water is pumped from an aquifer,
or diverted from a river, used at home,
and then returned to nature.
In this lesson, we will learn about
different occupations in a water
resource system, from the water
source to our home, and back again
to its source.
THREE MAJOR STAGES
WHERE THE WATER GOES THROUGH
STAGE I
It starts with predicting or measuring the properties
of the water source. It involved in finding water and
removing or extracting water from the source like a
river, a lake, and transferring it to a treatment plant.
Stage I is done by the following water people:

• CLIMATOLOGIST – a scientist
who studies about the long-term
trends or patterns and history
of climates of the earth. This is in
contrast to the short-term weather
patterns studied by meteorologists.
• HYDROLOGISTS – They strives
to understand the water system of
the earth and helps solve water
problems in society, especially water
quantity, quality, and availability.
Their job includes finding water
supplies for farms or cities,
controlling flood from rivers,
preventing pollution due to soil
erosion, or cleaning up sites for safe
disposal of hazardous waste.
HYDROLOGY includes the study of water
occurrence, distribution, movement and properties, and
its relationship with the environment. It is the study of
the distribution and movement of water both on and
below the Earth's surface, as well as the impact of
human activity on water availability and conditions.
• HYDROGEOLOGISTS – They do
research on groundwater systems
to determine where and how big
underground water reservoirs are.
Their works include analyzing soil,
rock, and water samples in search
of possible contaminants or
pollutants. They also advocate
public awareness and responsible
use of groundwater.
HYDROGEOLOGY deals with groundwater
science. It is the study of the laws governing the
movement of subterranean water, the mechanical,
chemical, and thermal interaction of this water with the
porous solid, and the transport of energy, chemical
constituents, and particulate matter by flow.
• LIMNOLOGISTS – They study
bodies of freshwater like ponds,
streams, lakes, or marsh. They also
study the productivity and functional
relationship of communities that live
near bodies of freshwater as they are
affected by the physical, chemical,
and biological components of the
environment. They examine how
healthy the water resource is and how
the quality of water can be improved.
THREE MAJOR STAGES
WHERE THE WATER GOES THROUGH
STAGE II
Water is then treated. The following careers involve
removing impurities from water at a water treatment
plant. These people get involved: watershed planners,
engineers, water pollution technologists, and municipal
planners.
1. WATERSHED PLANNERS – deal with
regional water source issues.
2. ENGINEERS – develop plans for storing
and transporting water from the water
source to the treatment plants, and to our
homes.
3. WATER POLLUTION
TECHNOLOGISTS – study how potable the
water is or how fit it is for drinking.
4. MUNICIPAL PLANNERS – help in
determining current and future community
needs.
THREE MAJOR STAGES
WHERE THE WATER GOES THROUGH
STAGE III
Treated water is then transported to a storage tank,
where it remains until it needs to be distributed to homes.
Other people also get involved in the management of our
water resources: government administrators, computer
technicians, sanitarians, and wastewater engineers and
operators.
1. GOVERNMENT ADMINISTRATORS –They
help insure that water areas for fisheries and
wetlands remain intact.
2. COMPUTER TECHNICIANS – They store
vital information and data in every stage in this
whole process in water services.
3. SANITARIANS , WASTEWATER
ENGINEERS, AND WASTEWATER
OPERATORS – They make sure that the water is
suitable for use. After wash has been used, these
people make sure its quality is acceptable before it
is to be returned to nature.
QUIZ
TEST I : IDENTIFICATION
1. They examine how the quality of water can be improved
and how healthy the water resource is.
2. It is pumped from an aquifer which used at home and
then returned to nature.
3. In this stage, water is then treated.
4. It is the study of the laws governing the movement of
subterranean water.
5. They help in determining current and future community
needs.
TEST II : TRUE OR FALSE
6. A hydrogeologist strives to understand the water system
of the earth and helps solve water problems in society.
7. A climatologist studies about the short-term trends or
patterns and history of climates of the earth.
8. The governments find water sources and help build wells
or pumps in areas that do not have clean drinking water.
9. Hydrogeology is the study of the distribution and
movement of water both on and below the Earth’s surface.
10.Sanitarians and government administrators make sure
that the water is suitable for use.
TEST II I: ESSAY
11-15. How are contaminants removed from polluted
water? Explain.

16-20. Differentiate the water people involve in Stage I.
