ADVANTAGES
• To find the most relevant information for your topic and
assignment
• To ensure the quality and reliability of your research
• To find expert views, opinions, and research on your topic
• To weed out unreliable, biased, outdated, and/or incorrect
information
• To make sure you get the information your professor is
seeking
DISADVANTAGES
• Time consuming
• Can be outdated
• Self-published books may be less reliable
• More difficult to access than some other resources

Relevance
refers to: How Well the Information Meets Your Needs
Does the information answer your research question?
Does the information help you understand your topic better?
Is the source written at a level appropriate for your intended use?
*Check the title, table of contents, summary or headings of the text to
have a sense of its content.

Contents/Accuracy of Information
=refers to Whether or Not the Information Is Correct

• Is the information provided correct/accurate?


• Are there typos or grammatical errors on the page or site?
• Can you verify the information from your own knowledge or other sources?
• Are there other sources that verify the information? Is it supported by evidence?
• Does the language or tone seem unbiased and free of emotion?

Evaluating information’s sources encourages us to
think critically about the:
 reliability,
 validity,
 accuracy,
 authority,
 timeliness, and
 point of view or bias of information sources.
