What is a Business Plan?
A business plan is a written document that
describes in detail how a business—usually a startup
—defines its objectives and how it would
achieve its goals. A business plan lays out a
written roadmap for the firm from marketing,
financial, and operational standpoints.

• Executive Summary: This section outlines
the company and includes the mission
statement along with any information about
the company's leadership, employees,
operations, and location.
• Why this business?
• Why now?
• Who’s going to buy?
• How will they buy? What’s the buying and
selling process will be like?
• How will my business be different than the
competitor’s?
• What’s my path to profitability?
• When will I become profitable?
• How much will I make and by when?

• Business Description: A business
description gives a snapshot of
the business you plan to run. Business
descriptions are typically written to appeal
to potential investors, but they are important
regardless of whether one is looking for
funding.

• Marketing Plan: A marketing plan is an
operational document that outlines an
advertising strategy that an organization
will implement to generate leads and reach
its target market. It details the outreach and
PR campaigns to be undertaken over a period
of time.

• Organizational Plan: Organizational plan is
the process of defining a company’s
reason for existing, setting goals aimed
at realizing full potential, and creating
increasingly discrete tasks to meet
those goals.

• Operational Plan: The operations plan section
describes the physical necessities of your
business‘s operation, such as your physical
location, facilities, and equipment. It may
also include information about inventory
requirements, suppliers, and a description of
the manufacturing process.

• Financial Plan: The financial plan is
focused on the current financial health
of your business versus a business plan that
is focused on your vision for the business. It
should provide facts and figures showing
how fast the business is expected to
grow and how that
growth will be funded.
