Introduction
An IV injection is for administration of
medications & fluid replacement via VEIN
which must be distributed throughout the
body & especially when rapid distribution is
required.
Indications

• Administration of Medications
• Administration of Nutritional products
• Repeated Blood Sampling
• Administration of Antibiotics
Sites for IV Injection
• Hand (Dorsal Arch Vein)
• Wrist (Volar Aspect)
• Cubital fossa (Medial Antecubital, Cephalic & Basilic Vein)
• Leg (Sphenous Vein)
Importance
• IV administration is one of the fastest way to introduce a
drug into the body.

• IV administartion is the avoidance of first pass


metabolism to the liver.

• IV administration can mainly be used in emergency


situation when person is not in usual state of health.
Procedure

● Introduce yourself to the patient

● Ask for consent & explain the procesure to patient

● Select suitable vein & wrap a torniquet

● Expose the area (if covered) & clean with Alcohol Swab

● Insert the needle (at angle 10 to 30 degree) carefully into the vein

● Inject the drug & remove needle carefully

● Compress the injection site immediately with sterile gauze to stop bleeding

● Dispose off the syringe & don’t recap the needle to avoid needle stick injury
