 INTRODUCTION

 The purpose of industrial training is to expose students to real working environment.

For my objective for having industrial training is to :

 1) Expose to the new working environment

• 2) To gain knowledge and equipment exposure

at the workplace

 3) To improve my soft skills

 COMPANY’S BACKGROUND

 The Malaysia Public Works Department or known as Jabatan Kerja Raya Malaysia (JKR)
is the federal government department under Ministry of Works Malaysia (MOW)

 Responsible for construction and maintenance of public infrastructure in Malaya and

Labuan.

 JKR for State Goverment department is divided by state.

 In Sabah and Sarawak, separate entity of Public Works Department exists under respective
state goverments jurisdiction.

 JKR’s Mechanical Branch is to maintain machinery and mechanical construction
for department.
 Mechanical Department Roles of JKR Bentong,
Raub, Kuala Lipis And Cameron Highlands.

 In mechanical department, it more often to :

 Maintain and repair all heavy machinery, vehicles and mobility mechanical
equipment owned by JKR Bentong, Raub, Kuala Lipis and Cameron Highlands.
 Carrying out the functions of the Government Mobile Asset Manager.
 Development Project Management.
 Expert Advice and Expert Services.

 Units in Mechanical Department

1. Function of maintenance unit 1 (Light Plant):

 Responsible to repair breakdown vehicle reported the vehicle’s operator.
 Job scope covered to maintain the wiring system, air conditioning system,
braking system, suspension system, parts related to engine and parts related to
steering system.
 They required to test, replace, adjust and repair the functional unit to its specified
function so it can perform perfectly.

2. Function of maintenance unit 2 (Heavy Plant):
 Responsible to repair breakdown heavy machinery vehicle such as backhoe, bulldozer and
roller.
 Job scope covered to maintain the braking system, suspension system, hydraulic system,
parts related to engine and parts related to steering system.
 Observe the oil (engine oil, fuel, grease, hydraulic oil, brake and steering fluid) and filter
(fuel filter, air filter and oil filter).
 Ensure the type of oil used for the vehicle engine, gearbox, axle, transmission, and joints.
Type of oil is crucial as to prevent the damage of the machinery and the peak performance
distortion.

3. Function of maintenance unit 3 (Services):
 Responsible to sustain the performance of the vehicle by maintaining the condition of
engine, gearbox, axle, moveable joint and etc.
 Observe the oil (engine oil, fuel, grease, hydraulic oil, brake and steering fluid) stock for
all type of vehicle and filter (fuel filter, air filter and oil filter).
 Regularly check conditions of all vehicle according to travels distance on speedo meter or
for some vehicle according to operating hours.
 Ensure the type of oil used for the vehicle engine, gearbox, axle, transmission, and joints.
Type of oil is crucial as to prevent the damage of the vehicle and the peak performance
distortion.

Services
 What did I learned?
1. At maintenance unit 1 (Light Plant);- SOME OF THEM :
 I learned on how to change the clutch flywheel of the pickup truck.
 To change it, the propeller shaft is needed to be remove first.
 To remove it, remove the bolts and nuts at rear support, center support and
front support.
 After done, remove the flywheel. Change the new one.
 To reinstall the propeller shaft, do the reverse step to open the propeller shaft.

2. At maintenance unit 2 (Heavy Plant);- SOME OF THEM :
 I learned on how to change the lubricant, hydraulic oil, transmission oil and filter.
 Lubricant used is SAE 40. Hydraulic oil used is ISO 46. Transmission oil used is SAE 90.
Filter used are fuel filter, oil filter and air filter.
 Oil filter is a part of the oiling system on an internal combustion engine. The filter takes
dirty oil and removes particulates and metal fragments from the oil.
 Fuel filter is located along the fuel lines. It is act as the device to trap large particles in the
fuel in order to prevent from getting into the engine.
 Air filter is a device composed of fibrous material which removes solid particulates such
as dust, pollen, mold and bacteria from the air.

3. At maintenance unit 3 (Services);- SOME OF THEM :
 I learned on how to change the lubricant, hydraulic oil, transmission oil and filter.
 In the minor servicing process, there are several things that need to do such as :
1.Change the engine oil (SAE 40 or SAE 15W-40)
2.Check and change the gearbox oil (SAE 90) and differential oil (SAE140)
3.Clean or change the air filter.
4.Clean the radiator.
5.Change the fuel filter.
6.Change the oil filter.
7.Checking the suspense and condition of belting.
8.Greasing to the all joint.
9.Check or adding the hydraulic oil.
10.Check the battery liquid.
 Process of changing the engine oil and
checking the gearbox and differential oil
 Run the engine for 10-15 minutes to heated the engine oil and turn off back.
 Remove the screw at the bottom of the oil sump to allow the old engine oil to drain out
from the oil sump. The old engine oil need to flow into the container

 Tighten back the screw on the oil sump. Then, refill the engine oil (SAE40) or
(SAE15W-40) until it reach the normal level on the “dipstick”. Other that that, if
needed, it can be adding the anti-rust oil in the engine.
 Moreover, for the gearbox system and differential system uses a different properties of
lubricants. Lubricants for the gearbox is (SAE90) while for the differential, it use
(SAE140).

 Checking process on the gearbox oil and differential oil by remove the screw on the
gearbox and differential.

 Make sure that the oil drain out. If the oil drains out, it mean that the oil in the normal
level. Make sure the colour and viscous of the oil in good condition
 Industrial training and related subject
 To practice the Soft skills value that I has learned in the early semester.
 Performing / observe work study as I learned in Industrial Engineering subject.

Conclusion
I am very grateful to the both sides, JKR Cawangan Kejuruteraan Mekanikal Pahang Barat and
all staff and UMP industrial supervisor because
 I have been exposed to the new working environment in mechanical engineering field.
 I have gained knowledge and equipment exposure at this workshop.
 And also I have improve my soft skills during my internship.
