DRESSING
A Dressing is a sterile pad or
compress applied to a wound to
promote healing and protect the
wound from further harm.
TYPES OF DRESSING
There are many different types of dressings ,the most common ones are;
GUAZE/CLOTH DRESSING
 Most commonly used and readily available wound dressing. made from Woven
or Nonwoven Silk, Linen. Polyester. Rayon or Cotton.
 Used for protection of open wounds or broken skin which occurred from minor
injury.
Transparent Film
 Clear polyurethane thin sheets
 Highly comfortable and elastic
 It is used when doctor want to keep track of a wound

Hydrogels
 They are meant to soothe wounds,reduce pain,help heal and fight infections.
 It adds moisture to dry wounds.
 It is best for dry wounds.
Foams
 Made of foamed polymer usually polyurethane
 Have open cells which can hold fluids, enabling
absorbency
 Help prevent bad odour, as well as moderate to
heavy discharge.
Hydrocolloids
 Made up of hydrophilic colloidal particles
 Used for burns, necrotic injuries, wounds with light
to moderate drainage, venous or pressure ulcer.
USES OF DRESSING
DRESSING CAN HAVE A NUMBER OF PURPOSES, DEPENDING ON
THE TYPE, SEVERITY AND POSITION OF THE WOUND.

 Stem bleeding : Help to seal the wound to


expedite the clotting process
 Protection from infection : Defend the wound
against germs and mechanical damage
 Absorb exudate : To soak up blood ,plasma and
other fluids exuded from the wounds
 Debride the wound :To remove slough and
foreign objects from wound to exudate
healing
 Ease Pain : Either by a medicated analgesic
effect. Compression or simply preventing
pain from further trauma.
 Reduce pscycological sress : To obscure a
healing wound from the view of patient and
others
PROCEDURE:
 Wash your hands and wear gloves
 Stop the bleeding
 Clean the wound with saline solution
 Apply an antibiotic or ointment
 Cover the wound with sterile guaze
 Use wound tape to hold the dressing in place.
