GETTING START COMPUTER
The first thing you will need to know is how to start your
computer up. To do this follow the instructions below:
Make sure the power point at the wall, where the computer is
plugged in, is on.
Push the power button on the front of the machine. You will
see some lights near the power button come on, these are the
lights to show you that the computer is running.
Check that the monitor is turned on (a green light will show
on the monitor). If the monitor is not on, push in the power
button on the monitor.

Logging on
When your computer has powered up, you will see
instructions to PRESS CTRL+ALT+DELETE to begin.
CTRL key, and an ALT key. On the right hand side of the
keyboard you will see a row of keys between the numeric
keypad and the letters; this is where the DELETE key is
located.

Press the CTRL and ALT keys together with the left hand
and press the DEL key with the right hand.
Once you have done this you will see a window like the
one below which will prompt you to enter your
USERNAME and PASSWORD into the correct areas.
when you have entered your details, click on the arrow
button or press ENTER on the keyboard.

START BUTTON
The Start button allows users to access their computer
programs or configure Microsoft Windows easily.

SHUT DOWN/RESTART MY COMPUTER
To shut down or power off a computer is to remove
power from a computer's main components in a
controlled way.
Restarting your computer is necessary for many
common tasks, including installing new software and
performing Windows Updates.
Standby or Sleep mode, your computer consumes less
electricity, but ready for immediate use.

Click on the clock to see a new popup window
To change the settings for the clock, the date, and the
time, click on "Change date and time settings".

If you want more than one time zone to appear, click
the" Additional Clocks" tab at the top of the Date and
Time dialogue box:

TOOLBARS
You can add Toolbars to your taskbar area. A toolbar is a
list of shortcuts to favourite areas of your computers.
Right click the Taskbar to see the following menu:

CREATING NEW TOOLBARS
At the bottom of the toolbar menu there is an item for "New
toolbar". This allows you to create a toolbar of your very
own:

To create a new account, click your picture on the Start
menu:

So to create a new account, click on the link "Create a
new account", which is circled in red above. You'll then
see a new screen:

Type a name for the account in the text box. (We'd just
called ours User2.) Keep it on the default
option, Standard user. Then click the Create
Account button at the bottom. You'll then be taken back
to the account page:

As you can see the new account is created, along with a
random picture (a balloon, in this case).
The Owner account will still be selected, however. Click
on your new account and you'll be able to change some
settings for it: (password, Account Type, Picture, etc.…)

When the User Accounts screen appears, click the link in
the bottom left that says "Parental Controls", circled in
red in the image below:

Select the option at the top for "On, enforce current settings".

Accessibility options (ease of Access)
Allows users to configure the accessibility of their PC. It
comprises various settings primarily aimed at users with
disabilities or hardware problems.
Add New Hardware (Hardware and Sound)
Launches a wizard which allows users to add new hardware
devices to the system. This can be done by selecting from a list
of devices or by specifying the location of the driver
installation files.
Administrative Tools (System and Security)
Contains tools for system administration, including security,
performance and service configuration. These are links to
various configurations of the Microsoft Management Console.

Add or Remove Programs
The Add/Remove Programs dialog allows the user to
manipulate software installed on the system in a number of
ways.
Allows users to uninstall and change existing software packages.
Allows users to manually install software from a CD-ROM or

Date and Time
Allows user to change the date and time stored in the
machine's BIOS, change the time zone and specify whether to
synchronize the date and time with an Internet Time Server

Displays and allows the user to edit or create network
connections such as Local Area Networks (LAN) and internet
connections. It also offers troubleshooting functions in case
the computer has to be reconnected to the network.

Right-click a blank part of the desktop and choose
Personalize.

Click the Desktop Background option along the
window’s bottom left corner.

Click any of the pictures, and Windows 7 quickly places it onto
your desktop’s background
Click the Browse button and click a file from inside your
personal Pictures folder
Adjust the way the picture looks using the Picture Position
option. Fill and Fit options for enlarging small photos
Click Save Changes and exit the Desktop Background window
when you’re satisfied with your choices.

Right-click any photo in your Pictures folder and choose Set as
Desktop Background.

About any letter for a partition of a device
WATCH OUT for the D drive on lab machines! It is another
hard drive that is not erased when you log out! Do not leave
your work on there!

FILE SYSTEMS – PARTITIONS
Note that a “partition” is not a physical device, although it
looks like one to the OS.
Why have a partition? At one point Windows could only
handle devices of a certain size. If your hard drive was
larger than that size, you could not access the entire device.
Partitions fool the OS into thinking that one device is two
(or more!) devices, each with their own letter and file
system
You will find disks partitioned even today, when some space
is used for a specific need, like a backup

Organize>Layout or just press Alt to turn if on temporarily.

CREATE NEW FOLDER
In order to organize all of your file, you first need to create folder
and sub-folders
Method 1 :File Menu
Navigate to the destination folder and go to
file menu >New >New Folder
Method 2 : Organize Menu

Navigate to the destination and go to the new Folder
Method 4 : Right Click
Rightclick on selected item and select new. On the cascading menu 78

COPY, CUT & PASTE
To Copy is to store in the clipboard a copy of a file, folder, text,
program icon or image that has been selected in an
application/program/open window or desktop. The original file,
folder, text, program icon or image is not moved from it's
original location.
To Cut is the same as Copy but the original file, folder, text,
program icon or image is removed from it's original location.
To Paste is to place Copied or Cut items stored in the clipboard
into new locations.
Items need to be highlighted or selected to perform copy and cut.

Zipped (compressed) files take up less storage space and
can be transferred to other computers more quickly than
uncompressed files. In Windows, you work with zipped
files and folders in the same way that you work with
uncompressed files and folders. Combine several files
into a single zipped folder to more easily share a group
of files.

ZIP AND UNZIP FILES
(COMPRESSED & EXTRACT)
Locate the file or folder that you want to zip.
Press and hold (or right-click) the file or folder, select (or
point to) Send to, and then select Compressed (zipped)
folder.
A new zipped folder with the same name is created in the
same location. To rename it, press and hold (or right-
click) the folder, select Rename, and then type the new
name.

FOLDERS FROM A ZIPPED FOLDER
Locate the zipped folder that you want to unzip (extract)
files or folders from.
Do one of the following:
To unzip a single file or folder, open the zipped folder, then
drag the file or folder from the zipped folder to a new
location.
To unzip all the contents of the zipped folder, press and hold
(or right-click) the folder, select Extract All, and then follow
the instructions.
