Introduction to Agriculture
AGRICULTURE
- is the art and science of cultivating the soil, growing
crops and raising livestock. It includes the preparation
of plant and animal products for people to use and
their distribution to markets.
- comes from the Latin words ager, means the soil
&cultura, means cultivation.
CROP
- a cultivated plant that is grown as food, especially a
grain, fruit, or vegetable.

OPERATIONS
Occupational Health and Safety(OHS)
Occupational safety- the practices related to
production and work process.
Health-a sound state of the body and mind of the
workers that enable him or her to perform the job
normally.
Safety-the physical or environmental conditions of
work which comply with the prescribed Occupational
Health Safety (OHS) standards and which allow the
workers to perform his or her job without or within
acceptable exposure to hazards.

avoid danger or
mistakes.
Hazard, Risk and Exposure in the Farm

Hazard- is the potential for harm or adverse effect


on an employee’s health.
Risk- is likelihood that a hazard will cause injury or
ill health to anyone at or near a workplace. The
level of risk increases with the severity of the
hazard and the duration and frequency of
exposure.
Exposure occurs when a person comes into
contact with a hazard.
