STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
The modern process of globalization has also affected
translation as a specific type of bilingual communication,
which not only reflects a multifaceted creative process, but
also contains a number of difficulties. One of the most
common difficulties in translation is the ability to apply
translation transformations and analyze the results of
interlanguage transformations, comparing the texts of the
original language and the language of translation .

• Object of research is the novel “Twilight” by S. Meyer .

• Subject of research is the linguistic specificity of translating English
metaphors and idioms into Ukrainian
KEY WORDS

• Translation
• Transformation
• A metaphor
• An idiom

CHAPTER 1. THEORETICAL ASPECTS OF RESEARCH
Translation studies is a discipline that is based on the phenomena related to
translation in its manifestations. . And while translation and interpreting are
activities that have existed for millennia, translation studies is a relatively
new field of study that has existed since the second half of the 20th century
and first developed from other fields such as modern languages, comparative
literature, and linguistics.
The scientist proposed an elaborate structure of the “empirical discipline”,
which has the realm of “pure” scientific research, which is divided into such
branches:
1) “descriptive translation studies”;
2) “theoretical translation studies or translation theory”.
Translation transformations
In most cases, when translating from the original language to another language, it is
difficult to do without resorting to certain changes.
A. Fiterman and T. Levytska in a joint study single out three types of translation
transformations:
1) grammatical transformations, that include the techniques of omitting and adding,
permuting, rebuilding, and replacing syntactic constructions;
2) stylistic transformations, that include such techniques, as synonymous
substitutions and descriptive translation, compensation, etc.;
3) lexical transformations (omission, replacement and addition, specification and
generalization of sentence elements)
CHAPTER 2. MAIN FEATURES OF TRANSLATING
ENGLISH METAPHORS AND IDIOMS INTO
UKRAINIAN IN THE NONEL OF S. MEYER
“TWILIGHT”
First of all, the peculiarities of the translation of metaphors in the novel “Twilight” by S.
Mayer should be considered, in particular, the specifics of the interpretation of translation
transformations based on the classification of T. Kropinova. The main properties of a metaphor
are its semantic duality, imagery, anthropometricity

Stylistic translation transformations:

- change of accent:
I’d already said my goodbyes to the sun.
– Я заздалегідь попрощалася з сонечком
In this example, a change of emphasis from one lexical item (my goodbyes) to another
(сонечком) is used.

Features of translating idioms

An idiom is a stable expression peculiar only to this language, which, regardless of the meaning of the words
in it, conveys a single concept and is mostly not literally translated into other languages. In our work, there
will be considered the examples of idioms based on the material of S. Mayer’s novel “Twilight” and the use of
translation transformations for their reproduction in the Ukrainian language.
Lexical-semantic translation transformations:

- synonymous distinction:

Maybe there was a glitch in my brain.

– Можливо, проблема крилася в моїй голові .

The given fragment includes an idiom a glitch in my brain, which in the original text is translated as a metaphor
(проблема крилася в моїй голові). The synonymous distinction was used here.
CONCLUSIONS

Translation as a separate science has a long history. Today, the issue of translation is
considered by many scientists, each of whom interprets the concept of translation in his/her
own way.
In the process of work, a selection of sentences was made based on the material of S.
Mayer’s novel “Twilight”. The sample consists of 20 pairs of sentences.

From the total number of examples (20 pairs of sentences), 2 examples (10%) were
. translated using lexical translation transformations, 3 examples (15%)– using lexical-semantic
translation transformations, 6 examples (30%)– with the help of grammatical translation
transformations, 1 example (5%)– with the help of stylistic translation transformations, 8
examples (40%) – using lexical-grammatic translation transformations.
