COMMITTEE?
A Parliamentary committee is a committee that:
Is elected or appointed by the House or nominated by the
Speaker/Chairman.
Works under the direction of Speaker/Chairman.
Presents its report to the House or to the Speaker/Chairman.
Has a secretariat provided by the Lok Sabha/Rajya Sabha.
The committee structure, for both the Houses (Lok Sabha and
Rajya Sabha) is similar, with a few differences.
The functions assigned
to the parliament are of
diverse nature and are
considerable in volume,
while the time available
is limited.
So, a number of
committees are elected
to study in detail each
and every matter that

This is the Committee that is constituted either
by the two houses, or by the Chairman/Speaker
of the House to inquire into and report on specific
subjects.
I N Q U I RY
Committee on Contemptuous Behaviour of
COMMITTEE
Government officers with Members of Lok
Sabha, Committee on the installation of Statues
of National leaders in the Parliament House
Complex.
For example, Committee constituted in the year
2009 to look into the matter of removal of Justice
Soumitra Sen (of Calcutta High Court).
Constituted to look into and report on specific bills.
When a Bill comes before a house for discussion, then the house
can refer the Bill to a Select Committee of that House, or a Joint
Committee of both the Houses.
A motion has to be passed in that house.
If the motion is passed to refer the Bill to a Joint Committee, the ADVISORY
other House is informed about it and is requested to nominate its
members for the Committee. COMMITTEES
The Committee then deliberates on the bill and after the Bill has (SELECT/
been considered, the Committee submits its report to the House.

Shah Nawaz Committee: - Appointed in 1955 after
the huge public demand to look into the
disappearance of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose.
Balwant Rai Mehta Committee: - Appointed
in 1957 to examine the working of Community
Development and National Services Programme.
Raj Narain committee: - Constituted in 1977 to look
into the mysterious death of former prime minister
Lal Bahadur Shastri.
Select Committee on
Lokpal and Lokayuktas Bill, 2011: - Constituted in
2011, for consideration of the Lokpal and Lokayuktas
Bill.
