Determination of Nitrites

(KNO2)

by
Prof. Niveen A. Mohamed
Department of Pharm. Chemistry

1
Principles:

Nitrites in warm acidic solution oxidized by KMnO 4 to nitrates as following:

5NO2- + 2KMnO4 + 6H+= 2Mn2++ 5NO3- + 3H2O

2
Procedure:

10 ml of 0.1 N KMnO4 in a beaker + 10 ml of dil. H2SO4 + 100 ml dist. water and warm to about
40 oC.
Titrate with the nitrite soln dipping the nosel of the burette under the surface of the acidified
MnO4- soln with shaking till decolorization of the soln.

Calculation:

F1 ( 1ml of 0.1 N KMnO4) = m.wt of KNO2 x 0. 1 / 2 x1000 gm KNO2

= 0.0043 gm KNO2

Conc.n of KNO2 = ml of St. soln x F1 x 1000 / ml of sample gm /l
