Metals and alloys are generally used as
fabrication or construction materials in
engineering. If the metal or alloy structures are
not properly maintained, they deteriorate slowly
by the action of atmospheric gases, moisture
and other chemicals.
1. Native state.
2. Combined state.

2. Wet or Electrochemical
corrosion.

Example
1. At anode
In anodic part, oxidation (or) dissolution of
metal occurs
(a)Acidic environment

Example
(a)Pitting corrosion
Pitting is a localised attack, resulting in the
formation of a hole around which the metal is
relatively unattacked.

3. By alloying
Corrosion resistance of many metals can be
improved by alloying. For example, stainless steel
containing chromium produce a coherent oxide film,
which protects the steel from further attack.
