BJT Characteristics and Parameters

BJT Circuit Analysis

• IB: dc base current
• IE: dc emitter current
• IC: dc collector current
• VBE: dc voltage at base with respect to emitter
• VCB: dc voltage at collector with respect to base
• VCE: dc voltage at collector with respect to emitter
• Let’s see the example!
, find IB(0.43 mA), IC(64.5 mA), IE(64.9 mA), VBE(0.7 V), VCE(3.55 V),
and VCB(2.85 V)

• Exercise
Determine find IB, IC, IE, VBE, VCE, and VCB for RB = 22 k,
RC = 220 , VBB = 6 V, VCC = 9 V, and = 90
BJT Characteristics and Parameters

Collector Characteristic Curves

• Shown in Figure 4–10(a), IC varies with the collector-to-emitter voltage, VCE, for specified values of base
current, IB.
BJT Characteristics and Parameters

Cutoff and Saturation

• Cutoff
IB = 0, VCE = VCC
• Saturation
As base-emitter is forward biased the collector current also increases (I C = DCIB) and VCE decreases (VCE = VCC
– IcRC), when VCE reaches VCE(sat), Ic cannot increase any further.
BJT Characteristics and Parameters

DC Load Line
• Relation between voltage and current in a transistor that is represented in a straight line.
• Ideal cutoff
Ic = 0; VCE = VCC
• Saturation
IC = IC(sat); VCE = VCE(sat)
• Determine whether the transistor in
Figure 4-16 is saturated with the following
parameters: DC = 125, VBB = 1.5 V,
RB = 6.8 kΩ, RC = 180 Ω, and Vcc = 12 V.
BJT Characteristics and Parameters

Maximum Transistor Ratings

• PD(max) = ICVCE
• The transistor in Figure 4–19 has
the following maximum ratings:
PD(max) = 500 mW, VCE(max) = 25 V,
and IC(max) = 200 mA. Determine
the maximum value to which VCC
can be adjusted without exceeding
a rating. Which rating would be
exceeded first?
