Sociology is the study of human social relationships and institutions
Sociology focuses on human interaction on the mutual and reciprocal
influencing by two or more people of each other's feelings,
attitudes and actions. Sociology does not so much focus on what occurs
within people as it does on what transpires between people.
Development of sociology
• The growth of sociology as an academic discipline in the United States
coincided with the establishment and upgrading of many universities
that were including a new focus on graduate departments and
curricula on “modern subjects.”
• The establishment of sociology as a discipline by Auguste Comte and
popularizing scientific methods for studying social conditions with
observation, experiments, and analysis paved a path for its
intellectual progress. Moreover, the revolution had brought the
society relying heavily on trade which was crucial for the discipline.
Pioneers of sociology
• Pioneers of Sociology Auguste Comte: Prominent French Philosopher
Comte coined the term sociology and contributed substantially to the
making of the discipline. His important works include Positive
Philosophy, Systems of Positive Polity and Religion of Humanity
Nature
• Sociology is a social science, not physical science. Social sciences focus
on various aspects of human society while physical sciences deal with
natural phenomena. Thus Sociology is a social science as it deals with
man and his social activities.
What is the primary goal of Sociology?
• Hunting-Gathering societies.
• Horticultural societies.
• Agrarian societies.
• Industrial societies.
• Post-industrial societies.
