INTRODUCTION
 Plastic having low density, high strength, user friendly designs,
fabrication capabilities, long life, light weight and low cost
characteristics are the factors behind the extraordinary growth.
 Plastics have been used in very large and useful applications, it
gives to an ever increasing amount in the solid waste stream.
 In the plastics waste, polyethylene forms the largest fraction, which
is followed by Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) that represents one
of the most common plastics in solid urban waste.
 As per the estimates, India produces 500,000 tons of pet waste
every year. [4]
 This is increasing at a rate of 1.5 to 2% every year. [4]
 Due to increasing use of pet bottles in daily Consumption, the
amount of waste is going to grow.
 The recycling rate of PET bottles is much less than the sales of
virgin PET production for common uses. This gap is dramatically
increasing, pushing towards finding a solution of this problem and a
higher recycle of PET.
 The PET bottles cannot be disposed of by dumping or burning, as
they produce uncontrolled fire or contaminate the soil and
vegetation.
 A possible application is to utilize waste PET fibers as replacement
of fine aggregates in concrete.

OBJECTIVES
 To study the properties of PET.
 To study the effect of PET over the compressive strength of
concrete.
 To compare the strength of PET mix concrete with conventional mix
concrete.
 To determine the percentage of plastic fibre which gives more
strength when compared to control concrete.

LITERATURE RIVIEW
Sahil Verma and Sahil Arora.(2015)[4]

AIM: To study the experiment on “Replacement of Natural sand in

concrete by polyethylene bottle"

MATERIAL USED :Cement ,sand ,coarse aggregate and pet bottle

pieces.

PROCEDURE:
o Mixing of concrete: Mixing of the actual quantities of the ingredients

of concrete is done in a concrete mixer for 3 minutes.

o Preparation of cubes: Cubes were prepared conforming to IS 456-

2000.For most of the work cubical size of 15cmX15cmX15cm is used.

o Curing: cubes were stored in moisture for 24 hours and period were

marked the removed from the moulds and kept submerged in fresh
water until test is performed.
o Testing: Cubes are tested in compression testing machine and

obsevered the results for 7 ,14 and 28 days.

CONCLUSION
o Upto 2% replacement of fine aggregates with waste PET fiber,
there is increase in compressive strength of concrete.

o For conventional concrete compressive strength for 7,14 and 28

days are 20.5N/mm2, 23.2 N/mm2 and 25 N/mm2 respectively. For
7days 22N/mm2 , for 14 days 26N/mm2 , for 28days 28.5N/mm2.

o Concrete mixed with waste PET fiber is eco-friendly, non-hazardous

as it easily get dispersed in concrete mix.

o Hence concrete with waste PET fiber can be used as an effective

plastic waste management practice in future.
 Ms .K.Ramadevi and Mrs. R. Manju.(2012)[5],

AIM: Study on the “Experimental investigation on properties of concrete with

plastic PET (Bottle) fibers as fine aggregate”.
MATERIAL USED: Cement, Fine aggregate, Coarse aggregate, plastic
fibers.
PROCEDURE:
 To collect the PET bottles needed for research.

 Granulating the pieces to smaller size as that of sand.

 Casting and curing of the basic test specimens(cubes,

cylinders) for determination of strength.

 To test the structural models(RC beams with various

percentage of plastic waste) for the results of 7 and 28 days.

CONCLUSION:
 It was observed that the compressive strength, flexural and split tensile
strength is increased up to 2% replacement of the fine aggregate with PET
bottle fibers and it gradually decreased for 4% and 6% replacements. Hence
replacement of fine aggregate with 2% replacement will be reasonable.
 Swaptik Chowdhury. et, al (2013)
AIM: To study the “Behavior of Concrete which is Partially Replaced with
Waste Plastic”.
MATERIAL USED: Cement , sand, coarse aggregate, PET bottle fibres,
PROCEDURE:
 0.5%, 1%, 2%, 4% & 6% of traditional fine aggregate was replaced for
M25 grade concrete by the PET fibres.
 All the cast specimens were de-moulded after 24 hours and were cured in
curing tank for a period of 7 to 28 days.
 They were taken for test such as compression test, split tensile strength
test and flexure test and results were noted.
CONCLUSION
 Compressive strength and split tensile strength increased up to 2%
replacement of the fine aggregate with PET bottle fibres and then
decreased for 4% and 6% replacements.
 The flexural strength of samples with PET bottle fiber as fine aggregate
increases gradually with the increase in the replacement percentage of
PET fibres.
P GANESH PRABHU et al,(2014)[7]

AIM:Study on utilization of waste pet bottle fiber in concrete.

MATERIAL USED: Cement, plastic bottles, fine aggregate, coarse
aggregete.
PROCEDURE:
o waste PET bottles as the different aspect ratio of 17, 33, 50, size of

fibre added in to the concrete with 0.5%, 1%, and 1.5% PET bottle
fibres for fine aggregate were produced and compared against control
mix with no replacement
o Cube specimens, cylinder specimens were cast, cured and tested for 3

day, 7 day and 28 days strength. Compression test, splitting tensile

test and flexural strength tests were done and the results were
compared with control specimens
CONCLUSION:
 The PET bottles would appear to be low-cost materials which would
help to resolve solid waste problems and preventing environment
pollution.
