Free and Bound Morphemes:


Morphemes are of two kinds ---------Free and Bound
 
Free Morpheme:
It is one that can be uttered alone with meaning as: straight and bright.
 
Bound Morpheme:
cannot be uttered alone with meaning it is always annexed to one or more
morphemes to form a word and cannot be uttered in isolation such forms as:
ante-, re-, -ly, un- played, preview
 ex. 8-3: Underline the bound morphem:
1- speaker ------------ .
2- kingdom ---------- .
• C. Bases:
• We have to distinguish between bases and affixes (such as prefixes and suffixes)
• A base morpheme is the part of a word that has the principle meaning as:
lovable, reenter
• A bound morpheme not principle in meaning as: consent

• Any word must contain 1base and one or more affixes as:
• Readability------- free base= read
• Two suffixes= abil and --- ity.
read(v.), readable(adj.), readability(n.)

• Unmistakable--- un|mis|take|able 1 free base which is take


• 2 Prefix un--, mis--- 1 suffix able
• Within bound morpheme it is difficult to know the exact meaning of them as in :
sent in the following words: resent ‫امتعض‬
• dissent‫مخا لف‬
• consent‫ي وافق‬
• sentiment‫حساس‬
