NITROIMIDAZOLE

Nitroimidazole
-used to treat anaerobic bacterial infections, parasitic infections,
and protozoal infections and prevent postoperative infections.

1. Flagyl (metronidazole)
2. Solosec (secnidazole)
3. Tindamax (tinidazole)
4. Spartrix (cardinazole)
5. Xynol (ornidazole)
Mechanism of action:

work by disrupting the DNA of the susceptible

bacteria and inhibiting the protein synthesis of the
cell wall leading to cell death; they act as bactericidal
and antimicrobial agents. Nitroimidazoles are given
orally as intravenous infusions and used for local
applications in skin infections.
Nursing intervention:
• Administer with food or milk to minimize GI irritation.
• Instruct patient to take medication exactly as directed evenly spaced
times between dose, even if feeling better. Do not skip doses or double
upon missed doses. If a dose is missed, take as soon as remembered if
not almost time for next dose.
•May cause dizziness or light-headedness. Caution patient or other
activities requiring alertness until response to medication is known.
• Inform patient that medication may cause an unpleasant
metallic taste.
•inform patient that medication may cause urine to turn dark
Adverse reaction:

nausea, anorexia, vomiting and metallic or bitter taste.

Dizziness, ataxia and headache.
