Cryptography Digital

signatures
Presenter – Vimal M

What is meant by Digital signatures ?
• It is a mathematical technique used to validate the authenticity and
integrity of a message, software, or digital document
• It is a technique that binds a person/entity to the digital data
• This binding can be independently verified by receiver as well as any
third party
• Digital signature is a cryptographic value that is calculated from the
data and a secret key known only by the signer
Encryption and Decryption
• It’s a process of converting electronic data into another form, called ciphertext,
which cannot be easily understood by anyone except the authorized parties
• This assures data security

Types of Encryption

1.Symmetric Encryption– Data is encrypted using a key and the decryption is

also done using the same key
2.Asymmetric Encryption- It uses public and private keys to encrypt and
decrypt data
Model of Digital Signature
Importance of Digital Signature
• Message authentication − verifier validates the digital signature
using public key of a sender
• Data Integrity − The hash of modified data and the output provided
by the verification algorithm will not match. Hence, receiver can
safely deny the message assuming that data integrity has been
breached
• Non-repudiation − User can only create unique signature on a given
data. Thus the receiver can present digital signature to a third party as
evidence
