Christopher Columbus was an Italian sailor born in 1451 who believed the world was round and decided to reach India by sailing west. In 1492, after struggling to get funding, Columbus embarked on an expedition and landed on an island in the Bahamas, believing he had reached Asia. Though his crew wanted to turn back, Columbus persevered. On later voyages he explored more of the Caribbean and South America, unaware he had discovered a new continent. Columbus made four voyages of exploration and died in 1506 still believing he had reached Asia.
