WHO ARE NEO FREUDIANS?

The neo-Freudians were psychologists whose


work followed from Freud’s. They generally
agreed with Freud that childhood experiences
matter, but they decreased the emphasis on
sex and focused more on the social
environment and effects of culture on
personality.

In childhood learned that his dad was not his
biological father.
Ranked as 12th most eminent psychologist of 20th
century.
STAGES:

• People develop sequentially that is broken in eight stages which go all the way
from infancy to adulthood.
• Failure to successfully complete a stage can result in a reduced ability to
complete further stages and therefore a more unhealthy personality and sense of
self.
TENSION:

Tension is a potentiality for action that may or may not be


experienced in awareness.
Sullivan recognized two types of tensions: needs and
anxiety. Needs usually result in productive actions, whereas
anxiety leads to nonproductive or disintegrative behaviors.
