(a)External Taper Measurement

Apparatus Required:
1.Sine Bar
2.Slip Gauges
3.Surface Plate
4.Spirit Level
Sine Bar:

• A sine bar consists of a hardened, precision ground

body with two precision ground cylinders fixed at the
ends.
• Sine bars are made from a high chromium corrosion
resistant steel, and is hardened, precision ground,
and stabilized.
• The relief holes are drilled into the body of sine
bar to reduce the weight, and to facilitate handling.
• Principle of Sine bar:
Slip Gauges: Slip Gauge is a metal or ceramic block that has
been precision ground and lapped to a specific thickness.
Wringing:
• Wringing is the phenomenon of adhesion of two flat
and smooth surfaces when they are brought into
close contact with each other.
• Wringing is done to avoid:
(a) Moisture trapping.
(b) Trapping of dust particles.
Surface Plate:
• A surface plate is a solid, flat plate (generally made of cast
iron) used as the main horizontal reference plane for
precision inspection, marking out (layout), and tooling
setup.
• In our lab, the marble on which we perform the
experiment is considered as the surface plate.
Spirit Level:
• A device consisting of a sealed glass tube partially
filled with alcohol or other liquid, containing an air
bubble whose position reveals whether a surface is
perfectly level.
Procedure:
• Place the work piece on the sine bar which is placed
on a surface plate.
• Keep sine gauges under one leg of sine bar, till the
tapered surface alligns with the horizontal.
• The flatness level is observed with the help of a spirit
level.
• Measure slip gauge length. As the distance between
the two sine bars is already known, find the taper
angle with the help of sine formula in previous slide.
(b)Internal Taper Measurement

• Apparatus Required:
1.Depth Gauge(To measure depth of the sphere)
2.Spheres(2 No’s)
3.Work piece with internal taper.
