Gear: It is a toothed wheel.
What does a gear do?
- Transmits motion.
- Increases speed.
- Changes direction.
Types of Gear Tooth:
1.Involute Profile: The locus of a point at the end of
a thread that is unwound from a circle.
2.Cycloidal Profile: The locus of a point on the rim of
a circular wheel as the wheel rolls along a straight
line without slipping.

• Pitch Circle Diameter: It is the diameter of a circle
which by pure rolling action would produce the same
motion on the toothed gear wheel.

• Module: It is defined as the length of the pitch

circle diameter per tooth.

• Addendum Circle: It is the outermost profile circle

of a gear.

• Addendum: It is the radial distance between the

pitch circle and addendum circle.
• Dedendum Circle: It is the innermost profile circle.

• Dedendum: It is the radial distance between the

pitch circle and the dedendum circle.

• Clearance: It is the radial distance from top of the

tooth to the bottom of the tooth space in the
mating.

• Full Depth: It is sum of addendum and the

dedendum.
• Backlash: It is the tangential space between teeth of
mating gears at pitch circles.

• Circular pitch: It is the space in pitch circle used by

each teeth.

• Gear ratio: It is the ratio of numbers of teeth on larger

gear to that of smaller gear.

• Pressure line: It is the common normal at the point of

contact of mating gears along which the driving tooth
exerts force on the driven tooth.
Objective of the experiment:
To measure the chordal thickness of the given gears using gear tooth vernier
callipers.
Methods of Gear Tooth Measurement:

1.Gear tooth vernier calliper

2.Constant chord method
3.Base tangential method
4.By dimension over pins
