 From its name,

if you have a group of features into a layer (polygons – lines –
points..) and for some reason you want to get a copy of some
features separated out from their original layer – after you select
them you can use this tool.
In ArcMap this plugin called ‘Make Feature Layer’ OR

 You can get the same by right click on the layer after you select some features
Selection Create Layer from Selected Features
Surprisingly, in QGIS if you want to get a separated
features you haven’t this simple option if you press
right click on the layer name!

 You need to install this plugin to do this.
