Introduction to
Mountain Tourism

Mountain Tourism is a type of "tourism


activity which takes place in a defined and
limited geographical space such as hills or
mountains with distinctive characteristics and
attributes that are inherent to a specific
landscape, topography, climate, biodiversity
(flora and fauna) and local community.
Introduction
Meaning
The name Manaslu means "mountain of the spirit"
and is derived from the Sanskrit word manasa,
meaning "intellect" or "soul". Manaslu was first
climbed on May 9, 1956, by Toshio Imanishi and
Gyalzen Norbu, members of a Japanese expedition.
*The Manaslu region offers a variety of trekking options. The
popular Manaslu trekking route of 177 kilometres (110 mi)
skirts the Manaslu massif over the pass down to Annapurna.
* The Nepalese Government only permitted trekking of this
circuit in 1991.
*The trekking trail follows an ancient salt-trading route along
the Budhi Gandaki River.
En route, 10 peaks over 6,500 metres (21,325 ft)
are visible, including a few over 7,000 metres
(22,966 ft).
The highest point reached along the trek route is the
Larkya La at an elevation of 5,106 metres (16,752
ft). As of May 2008, the mountain has been climbed
297 times with 53 fatalities.

Why Manaslu is called killer
mountain.
More than 60 mountaineers have given their
lives while summiting the eighth highest
mountain. The Mountain of Spirit might not be
the highest peak of the world. But, it is
dangerous like every difficult peak. It requires
good experience and a great technical approach
to be able to summit the peak. Most people
summit it before Everest to experience what it’s
like to trek at a high altitude.
Main Reasons For Manaslu Deaths
As you already know, a high number
of deaths have happened in Manaslu
Region. The causes of Manaslu’s
deaths are quite scary. From altitude
sickness to avalanches, people get
destroyed by mother nature if things
don’t go as planned.
Some of the major reasons for Manaslu
Deaths include:
Avalanche
Fall
Exhaustion
Altitude sickness
Hit by falling seracs
Collapsing
Culture and Tradition in Manaslu Region
Religion and Culture of the Manaslu region is one of the
most culturally diverse areas of Nepal. One can
generalize it in two major hilly and Tibet nearing
mountain regions. Starting the trail leading to the
upper Manaslu we will find the Chettri, Brahmin,
Magar. And Newar people mostly reside here. The
upper area predominantly constitutes of Tibeto-
Burmans, Indo-Aryans from the south, and the
Mongoloids from the north. The Chikkur River divides
the regions with distinctive Nubri and Tsum ethnicity
here in Manaslu. Manaslu area also has the trails
leading to the significant villages in the mountains
here.
Gyalpo Lhosar
Celebrated by Sherpa

It was named Gyalpo because it was celebrated


by the Tibetan Royal families and Royal Gumbas
as well as some significant Tibetan Lamas. In
Nepal, it is mostly celebrated by Sherpa,
Tamang, Bhutia and Yolmo community people.
Different communities and different places have
their own way of celebration.
Festivals of Tamang: The most important event for Buddhist Tamangs is
Buddha Jayanti, which happens on BaisakhPurnima. Lord Buddha was born
on this day, enlightened, and gave his first teaching on the four noble
truths. On this day, people visit Buddhist temples and monasteries such
as Swyambhunath and Bouddhanath, and offer Khatag to Lord
Buddha.Tamangs celebrate the same manner all across the world.
Another major Tamang celebration is SonamLhosar. Lhosar is a Tamang
word that meaning “New Year,” with “Lho” referring to the year and
“Chhar” referring to anything new. They also go to holy sites on this day.
They also celebrate other festivals like as Dashain, Tihar, Janaipurima,
and others.
