 Mao took over
 Nationalists moved to Taiwan
 Main goal was to make China an iconic country over the world
 By 1958, Mao rejected Soviet Guidance and Advice
WHO IS MAO ZEDONG?

 Influenced by Vladimir Lenin
and Karl Marx.
 Goal was to create
centralized government.
POLITICAL CHANGES UNDER MAO

 Chairman of Communist
Party and leader of China
(1943-1976)
 Communis government on
mainland China.
ECONOMIC CHANGES UNDER MAO
• First five year planning (1953-1957)

- Advancement in agriculture
• Second five year planning:

- Great leap year forward


- Becoming a leading industrial country
- Communism is the main theory
- Catastrophe: at least 14,000,000 deaths.
GREAT LEAP FORWARD

 To meet China’s agricultural and economical


problem.
 To make China modern industrial country.
 Instead of stimulating, the plan went into
starvation and famine.
 Non-wartime mess at its best.
CULTURAL REVOLUTION
 Launched in May, 1966
 The goal was to create a classless
society where everyone is equal.
 Resulted in chaos.
 Many people lost their lives.
 In 1969, Mao brings to it’s end.
MODERN CHINA
 Following the cultural revolution,
many Chinese moved away from
communism.
 1971: China opened door with
USA.
 A modern Communist Xiaoping
(arch of modern China) rose to
power in China.
