Reading
What is reading?

Reading is one of the four language skills.

It is generally agreed that the two main aims of reading are information and
pleasure.

The most acceptable definition of reading is the “process by which we make

sense of text”.

In simple words, reading means looking at the written word and
understanding the message.
Types of Reading
1) Skimming:

2) Scanning

3) Intensive Reading

4) Extensive Reading
Skimming:

Literally ‘skimming’ means taking off cream from

milk.

In language study, it means reading something very

quickly to find out what is it about.

It is a useful technique in extensive reading such as

newspaper reading and novel reading.
Scanning:

Literally ‘scanning’ means locating or discovering the

place of something.

In language study, it means reading a text quickly to

look for a specific piece of information.

We scan (examine hastily) the page or pages until our

eyes discover the required information we are looking
for.
Intensive Reading:

It is also called ‘Study Reading’.

It means the close and deep reading usually of a short

text.

It is slow reading as it takes time and effort.

The reader has to pay a great deal of attention to

detail.
Extensive Reading

It means reading long texts, usually for once own

pleasure.

Unlike intensive reading, extensive reading is done

mostly outside the class room in spare time.

The aim here is to get on with the story, to read for gist
and note detail.
Factors affecting reading habits

First, something isn’t happening in schools. Now it

seems we are increasingly trying to focus on producing
entry-level workers for a service economy.

Second and this isn’t arguable, we are now surrounded

by a great welter of electronic alternatives to reading.

Third is that the media in our culture does not

seriously discuss or present reading or the rest of the
arts.
Importance of Reading

'There are worse crimes than burning books. One of
them is not reading them.' - Joseph Brodsky.

Reading is the basic foundation on which academic

skills of an individual are built.

Reading books expose basic culture and history more

exclusively than the electronic media.
Advantages of Reading

If you are one of the non-book readers who feels “don’t

need no stinking books”, here are some great reasons to
start the habit.

• Learn anywhere – Books are portable. You can take

them almost anywhere. As such, you can learn almost
anywhere too.

Improves your vocabulary – While reading books,

especially challenging ones, you will find yourself
exposed to many new words you wouldn’t be otherwise.
Advantages of Reading

Books are inexpensive entertainment – Average price

of a book is less than a movie ticket. If you have a used
bookstore nearby, you can get them even cheaper.

Improves your reasoning skills – Books for professionals

contain arguments for or against the actions within. One
can give better reasoning if have a good knowledge

Reduces stress - If relaxation is something you want, turn

off the TV or computer and pick up a book. Because TV is
too full of loud commercials and fast moving images.
Advantages of Reading

Reading is an active mental process – Unlike TV, books

make you to use your brain. By reading, you think more and
become smarter.

Decreased boredom –If I am feeling bored, I will pick up a

book and start reading. So, I become interested in the book’s
subject and stop being bored. I mean, if you’re bored anyway,
you might as well be reading a good book.

The book is always better than the movie – except for

perhaps No Country for Old Men.
Conslusion
Reading has at all times and in all ages been a source
of knowledge, happiness, pleasure and even moral
courage.

Inspite of having all the electronic and multimedia

sphere around the globe, reading of books is still the
