SUB : Basic Electrical & Electronics Engineering

TOPIC : P AND N- TYPE
SEMICONDUCTORS
SEMICONDUCTORS

Semiconductors are materials whose

electrical properties lie between conductors
and insulators
Ex : Silicon (Si) , Germanium (Ge)

Two – types of semiconductor :

1 : intrinsic semiconductor

2 : extrinsic semiconductor
N – type semiconductor
• A p – type material is one in which electrons are
majority charge carries they are negatively
charged materials (- - - - -- - - - )

• Pentavalent impurities
P – type semiconductor
 A p – type material is one in which holes
are majority carriers they are positively
charged materials (+++)

 Trivalent impurities
DIODES

Electronics devices created by bringing together a p – type

and n - type region within the same semiconductors
lattice

Used : Rectifers , LED etc
