Objective:
The objective of this project is to briefly discuss about the
2-D and 3-D motion and with the help of referential images
and examples make the concept of 2-D and 3-D Motion clear.
What is Motion?
In physics, motion is the phenomenon in which an
object changes its position over time.
Motion can be of three types depending on the dimensions
of the medium in which a body is moving. They are:

One Dimensional Motion.

Two Dimensional Motion.
Three Dimensional Motion.

2-D and 3-D motion will be discussed in brief here.

 2-D Motion :
 Two dimensional motion is the type of motion in
which a body is moving in a 2-D plane and the position of
the body changes with respect to X and Y axis.

 Projectile Motion and Circular Motion are some examples

of Two Dimensional Motion.
Projectile Motion:
 When a particle is thrown obliquely near the earth’s surface, it moves along a
curved path under constant acceleration that is directed towards the centre of
the earth (we assume that the particle remains close to the surface of the earth).
The path of such a particle is called a projectile and the motion is called
projectile motion.

In a Projectile Motion, there are two simultaneous independent

rectilinear motions:
 Along the x-axis: uniform velocity, responsible for the horizontal
(forward) motion of the particle.
 Along y-axis: uniform acceleration, responsible for the vertical (downwards)
 motion of the particle.

Motion.
Circular Motion:
 Circular motion is described as a movement of an object
while rotating along a circular path. Circular motion can be
either uniform or non-uniform. During uniform circular
motion the angular rate of rotation and speed will be
constant while during non-uniform motion the rate of
rotation keeps changing.

 Some of the most common examples of circular motion

include man-made satellite that revolves around the earth,
a rotating ceiling fan, a moving car’s wheel, the blades in a
windmill, and gears in gas turbines.
Uniform Circular Motion.
3-D Motion:
 The type of motion in which a particle moves in a
3-D space and the motion of the particle is defined
by X, Y and Z axis is known as 3-D motion.

 Some of the common examples of 3-D Motion are :

• Motion of an aeroplane
• Motion of a flying bird
• Motion of a kite.
In all the examples for the 3-D motion its apparent
that the moving body is in a 3-D space and its motion
is described along all the three axis X,Y and Z.
3-D SPACE DEFINED
BY X, Y AND Z AXIS.
Conclusion:
Motion and study of motion is a very distinct branch in physics.
The general study of the relationships between motion, forces, and energy is
called mechanics.
It is a large field and its study is essential to the understanding of physics
Mechanics can be divided into sub-disciplines by combining and recombining its
different aspects. Some of these are given special names.
The study of motion without regard to the forces or energies that may be
involved is called kinematics. It is the simplest branch of mechanics.

The branch of mechanics that deals with both motion and forces together is
Called dynamics and the study of forces in the absence of changes in motion
or energy is called statics.

Knowledge about the motion of a particle in 1-D, 2-D and 3-D planes is
necessary for further studying in the above mentioned branches of physics
dealing with motion hence this project on topic “2-D and 3-D Motion” is an
helpful asset in studying physics.
